If your cat is missing, start by searching your home and the immediate area, then alert local animal services, shelters, veterinary clinics and neighbors. Keep checking and following up: a cat may be hiding nearby, shut inside an outbuilding or picked up and taken to a shelter. Use the steps below in parallel where you can, and ask your local animal control or shelter about local procedures and hours.
1. Confirm when and where your cat was last seen
Ask everyone in the household when they last saw the cat and where. Check the most likely exit points, then search indoors quietly and methodically before assuming the cat got outside. Cats can hide in small, dark or unexpected spaces.
- Look under beds, inside closets, behind bulky furniture and in other enclosed spaces.
- Check around doors, windows and other likely exits.
- Try gently shaking treats, setting out food or using a familiar toy to draw a hiding cat out.
The ASPCA recommends searching the home and surrounding area as an early step in its lost-pet guidance.
2. Search nearby and ask neighbors to check enclosed spaces
Walk slowly around your home and immediate neighborhood with a recent photo. Look under porches, decks and shrubs. Ask neighbors to inspect garages, sheds, crawl spaces and other places where a cat might have become trapped. Get permission before entering private property.

The Humane Society of the United States recommends starting within a five-house radius. Its 2023 cat-care guide says most lost cats are found less than a third of a mile from where they escaped; it does not identify an underlying study in the cited guidance, so treat this as a search priority, not a guarantee or a boundary for your search. Continue broader outreach and shelter follow-up even if nothing turns up nearby.
Pet FBI also recommends checking close to home and asking neighbors to search places where a cat could be shut in. See its lost-cat behavior guide.
3. Contact shelters and the local animal network
Call your local animal control agency, municipal and private shelters, veterinary hospitals and rescue groups as soon as possible. File a lost-cat report wherever the local process allows. Ask each organization how to check its listings and whether you can visit in person with a current photo. Keep checking: descriptions and appearances can change, and a cat may not be recognized from a first report.
If your cat has a microchip, mark the cat as lost with the registry and verify that your phone number and other contact details are current. ASPCA guidance recommends checking with shelters and animal control and visiting shelters where possible. Its shelter policy also notes that people who find animals should follow the law in their jurisdiction on reporting, identification and designated holding facilities. Procedures vary, so ask local animal control or a shelter what applies where you live before holding or transporting a found animal.

4. Send one clear, consistent neighborhood alert
Make a flyer and online post using the same details so neighbors can recognize the cat and know how to reach you. Include:
- A recent, clear photo and a large “MISSING CAT” heading.
- Your cat’s color, sex, age and distinguishing features.
- When and where the cat was last seen.
- Reliable contact numbers.
Ask neighbors, friends and administrators of local social-media groups to share the alert. The ASPCA’s lost-pet page includes guidance on what to put on flyers. The Humane Society of the United States also suggests uploading a cat’s photo to Petco Love Lost, which it describes as using facial-recognition software.
5. Search again when it is quiet
Repeat nearby searches at quieter times, including at night. Pet FBI recommends calling in a normal speaking voice and using a flashlight; reflected eyes may be easier to spot in the dark. Ask nearby residents to check hiding places and enclosed areas again, especially garages, sheds and crawl spaces that may have been closed after your first search.

If your cat escaped from home or has been sighted at a particular place, you can consider placing food and water there. A motion-activated camera can help establish whether the cat visits and when. The Humane Society of the United States describes this sequence in its 2023 lost-cat guide.

If a feeding pattern is established, a humane trap may be an option. Ask a local shelter or rescue group for advice on safe setup and monitoring, and do not leave a trap unattended. A camera or trap is a conditional tool for a known location; it does not replace searching the neighborhood, alerting people or contacting shelters.
7. Keep following up
Continue checking with shelters and animal control, revisiting listings and keeping neighborhood alerts active even if your cat is not found right away. The Humane Society of the United States notes that cats can be found after weeks or months of searching. In its February 2026 community-cat handbook, Best Friends Network reports that the most common reunion methods in cited survey results were cats returning home on their own or being found in the neighborhood where they went missing; the cited passage does not give percentages.
That handbook also reports that 5.6% of stray-cat intake at U.S. brick-and-mortar shelters was returned to owners, citing Shelter Pet Data Alliance figures from 2023. That statistic applies to that specific intake group; it is not an estimate of an individual cat’s chance of coming home. It is a reason to keep shelter reporting and follow-up in the plan.
