1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo protect your dog outdoors, bring fresh water, plan dependable shade and airflow, choose cooler hours and ground, and stop for rest as soon as your dog seems uncomfortable. Heat risk depends on more than the air temperature: humidity, sun, exertion, airflow, surface heat and your dog’s individual health all matter. If you suspect heat illness, move your dog out of the heat, begin cooling and contact a veterinarian urgently.
Plan an outing around shade, water and an easy way to stop
Before leaving, check that dogs are allowed at your destination and that you can find shade, fresh water and a cooler place to rest. Bring enough water for the outing and a portable dog water bottle or dispenser. Offer water during breaks; the amount and frequency a dog needs depend on conditions and the individual dog.
Choose the cooler parts of the day and avoid strenuous exercise in hot conditions. The AVMA recommends cooler-hour walks, frequent breaks and bringing water for both dog and handler. Keep the route short enough to turn back or stop early, and make sure shade is reachable rather than relying on an open patch of sun. A doghouse or enclosed area is not a substitute for a cool, well-ventilated place.
- Carry fresh water and a portable dispenser.
- Build in breaks in shade with airflow.
- Choose grass or shaded routes where possible; avoid hot asphalt and other hot surfaces.
- Check the ground before walking. If it feels hot, pick a cooler route or wait.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car, even in shade or with the windows cracked.
RSPCA UK advises offering small amounts of water during outings and ensuring dogs can access cool ground. Its hot-walk page also publishes a comparison that dogs are 10 times more likely to suffer heat-related illness from exercising in hot weather than from overheating in cars; the page does not state a year or expose the underlying study citation, so treat it as an RSPCA-published comparison rather than a newly verified statistic. RSPCA UK’s hot-weather walking guidance explains its recommendations.

Is the weather too hot for your dog?
There is no single air-temperature cutoff that guarantees an outing is safe. Heat load builds from several factors: hot or humid weather, direct sun, poor airflow, strenuous activity, limited water or shade, and hot ground. A route that feels manageable in a breeze may be risky in still, humid conditions or for a dog working hard.
All dogs can develop heat illness, but some may be more vulnerable:

- 2-in-1 Vest & Light Walking Harness: Engineered for relaxed summer outings, this cooling vest for dogs features an integrated D-ring designed strictly for gentle, no-pull walking when your dog is cooling down. It is not rated as a heavy-duty anti-pull harness. The visibility reflective trim wraps around the chest and back, ensuring maximum safety and peace of mind during late-night or early-morning summer walks.
- Rugged yet Lightweight Comfort for Daily Wear: Built for active dogs who love outdoor exploration, the outer layer is made of abrasion-resistant, quick-dry fabric that withstands rough play and scratches. The streamlined, breathable inner mesh allows maximum air circulation, reducing bulk and heat buildup so your large dog can run, jump, and explore with ease.
- Short-faced breeds, including pugs and bulldogs, whose shortened muzzles can make panting less effective.
- Dogs carrying excess weight, very young or older dogs, and dogs with underlying health problems.
- Some thick-coated dogs, or dogs wearing clothing that limits heat loss.
- Dogs not acclimatized to heat, especially when asked to exercise vigorously.
The RSPCA UK notes research associating brachycephalic breeds with higher heatstroke risk. Breed or a day’s forecast alone cannot establish that a particular dog is safe. Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s health, exercise limits and precautions for hot weather.
How to keep your dog cool on a hot walk
Use the dog’s behavior as your guide. If your dog lags, seeks shade, resists moving, or begins panting unusually heavily, stop the walk rather than encouraging them onward. Move to shade or a cooler, ventilated place, offer water and allow them to rest. If they do not promptly seem comfortable, or show any warning signs below, treat it as a potential emergency.

- Keep your dog cool this summer with the Swamp Cooler Vest; It provides sun protection and evaporative cooling for hot weather activities such as hiking, walking, camping, and more
- We’ve updated the external air mesh for greater durability and water absorption; The new construction retains more water in high-exposure zones so they can play and explore more
- To activate, simply soak in water, wear and go; The outer layer reflects heat and facilitates evaporation while the updated middle layer absorbs more water to keep them cool longer
- Features an inner mesh lining keeps your pup dry and comfortable; The relaxed fit provides maximum shade with UPF 50+ to help protect them from the sun; Side-release buckles for easy on and off
- Wear on its own or layer over a harness with the integrated leash portal; Compatible with most harnesses, including Ruffwear’s Front Range, Hi & Light, and Web Master harnesses
A cooling mat or fan may be a useful extra where practical, but neither replaces accessible water, shade, rest and stopping activity when conditions are unsafe. Cooling gear does not make a hot, strenuous outing safe.
How to recognize heat illness or dehydration
Watch for signs that are heavy, excessive or unusual for your dog, including:
Rank #4
- Goldilocks Cooling Performance: Not too heavy, not too light; just right for summer comfort; dual-layer design made with true cooling microfiber, not mesh; outer layer evaporates while inner layer holds moisture for longer-lasting relief on hot days
- Soft and Durable: Premium quality microfiber feels soft against your dog’s skin and resists snagging better than single-layer alternatives; ideal for those seeking comfort and quality in a lightweight cooling vest
- Fast-Activating Cooling: No ice packs needed; just soak, wring out, and wear; vest activates instantly through evaporative cooling and can be rewetted throughout the day without refrigeration or inserts
- Adjustable and Harness-Friendly Fit: Secure Velcro chest straps ensure a snug, custom fit without restricting movement; can be worn under most walking harnesses and is available in six sizes from XS to XXL for small to large breeds
- Stylish Camo with UV Protection: Available in blue, pink, and green camo patterns; covers your dog’s back and chest for all-day sun protection with dense, tightly woven fabric to help block harmful UV rays
- Heavy panting, noisy breathing or difficulty breathing.
- Excessive drooling, or gums that look abnormally red or pale.
- Weakness, lethargy, unsteadiness or confusion.
- Vomiting or diarrhea, muscle tremors, seizures or collapse.
- Little or no urination.
These signs can indicate heat illness, not just dehydration. Do not wait for a dog to collapse before acting, and do not assume that drinking water alone will resolve the problem.

- Stop activity and get out of the heat. Move your dog to shade or a cooler, well-ventilated place.
- Start cooling while seeking veterinary help. Use cool or room-temperature water and airflow, and contact a veterinarian urgently. Follow the veterinarian’s directions while arranging care.
- Do not wait to see whether severe signs pass. Keep seeking veterinary advice even if your dog appears to improve.
RSPCA Australia’s warning is direct: “Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency. Seek veterinary attention immediately.” Its page, updated May 8, 2023, advises applying room-temperature or cool water and getting veterinary attention immediately: RSPCA Australia’s heatstroke signs and treatment guidance. RSPCA UK likewise advises stopping further heating, cooling the dog and then transporting them to a vet: RSPCA UK’s hot-weather advice. Cooling details can depend on the dog’s condition; urgent veterinary care is the priority.
