Why Rescue Dogs Seek Comfort From Other Dogs: What the Evidence Can—and Can’t—Tell Us

Rescue dogs may seek another dog’s company for reassurance, familiarity, or other reasons. Here is what shelter and stress-buffering studies show—and what they cannot tell you about an individual dog.

Rescue dogs may stay close to another dog because social proximity can feel reassuring, but current studies do not establish why adopted rescue dogs do this at home. The strongest evidence for social stress buffering in dogs concerns familiar humans; evidence involving other dogs comes mainly from shelter settings. A dog’s closeness is observable, but it does not by itself prove comfort, anxiety, or a particular history.

Why might a rescue dog stay close to another dog?

Several explanations are possible: the dogs may have a familiar bond, the nearby dog may make an unfamiliar situation feel safer, or the dog may simply prefer that companion’s company. Which explanation fits depends on the individual dogs and the situation. The studies available here do not directly test why adopted rescue dogs seek another dog at home, so comfort is a plausible interpretation, not a proven motive.

“Rescue dog” also does not describe one shared past. A dog’s early experiences may be known, partly known, or unknown, and dogs with different backgrounds may respond differently. Avoid inferring a specific history or emotional state from the rescue label alone.

What studies say about social comfort in dogs

Evidence about a familiar human is not evidence about another dog

In a 2023 study, Samantha L. Awalt and Rosemary Strasser tested 45 dogs during a threatening-stranger situation, with the dog accompanied either by its owner or an unfamiliar human. Twenty-three dogs had known adverse early histories. That group showed more contact, relaxed behavior, and social referencing when owners were present. The study examined human-dog stress buffering; it did not test whether another dog provides the same effect. Read the study.

Other shelter research also concerns human contact rather than dog-dog comfort. Gácsi and colleagues observed 60 shelter dogs in a modified Strange Situation Test; brief prior handling was associated with attachment-like behavior toward the handler. In a 2006 study, Coppola, Grandin, and Enns reported lower cortisol on day three among shelter dogs given about 45 minutes of human interaction on day two than among dogs without that session. Neither finding demonstrates that dogs seek comfort from other dogs.

Shelter housing findings are relevant, but limited to that setting

A 2024 PLOS One study collected behavioral data daily for seven days from 61 shelter dogs: 30 housed alone and 31 housed in pairs. Its abstract reports fewer lip-licking, whining, and ears-back observations among pair-housed dogs, with no detected difference between the groups in measured dog-dog skills. These group-level results suggest that pair housing can be associated with differences in some observed behaviors in that shelter context. They do not explain an individual adopted dog’s motive or show that every rescue dog benefits from living with another dog. Read the study abstract.

A separate record describes 12 adult pair-housed shelter dogs observed after one dog was removed from its companion. Behavioral and physiological changes were reported as consistent with stress in that sample. With only 12 dogs and a shelter-specific setup, this is not a universal rule about separation or a prediction for every bonded pair. View the University of Edinburgh research record.

Research on visual contact between dogs in shelters addresses yet another circumstance: seeing other dogs is not the same as sharing a home with a companion. Wells and Hepper’s 1998 study examined visual conspecific contact and the behavior of sheltered dogs, not why an adopted dog chooses to remain close to a housemate.

How adoption and context affect what you observe

Behavior can change as a dog adjusts to an adopted home. Bohland and colleagues followed 99 dogs adopted from five Ohio shelters, surveying them at 7, 30, 90, and 180 days after adoption. They reported changes in several behavior measures over the first six months. Those are cohort-level results, not a timetable or forecast for every dog; they do show why a single early observation may not capture a dog’s settled behavior. Read the study.

When your dog seeks another dog’s company, look at the surrounding circumstances rather than treating closeness as a diagnosis:

  • Extra Protection: The Bedsure waterproof blanket can protect your couch and floor from small spills, pet hair, stains and so much more. Its portable design makes it easy to move between rooms or take with you on the go. Compact when dry for travel, hotel, camping, and car trips
  • Care Tips & Portable :Machine wash cold, tumble dry on low heat, and consider using wool dryer balls to shorten drying time—flipping the blanket every 30 to 45 minutes will also help ensure it dries evenly. Note: The waterproof layer may experience reduced performance after washing.
  • Situation: Notice whether it happens during ordinary rest, around unfamiliar people or noises, or after a particular event.
  • Both dogs’ behavior: Consider whether the companion also appears relaxed and willing to stay nearby, rather than focusing only on the dog seeking contact.
  • Pattern over time: Observe whether the behavior changes as your dog settles into the home and learns its routines.
  • Other signs: Consider the dog’s overall behavior, not proximity alone. The studies do not establish a single cue that proves comfort or distress.

These observations can help describe when the behavior occurs, but they cannot establish the dog’s internal motive by themselves.

Should a rescue dog be paired with another dog?

The shelter pair-housing findings are not a recommendation to adopt a second dog or arrange a pairing at home. They describe outcomes for dogs housed together in one shelter study, not the compatibility, welfare, or likely behavior of a particular household pair. The available evidence does not establish that another dog is the right solution for a dog that seems uneasy or needs support.

If fear, distress, or conflict is persistent, a qualified canine behavior professional may help assess the specific dogs and circumstances. A brief episode of closeness, on its own, is not enough to diagnose a problem.
