Rust-colored marks beneath the eyes, around the mouth, or on the paws often develop where tears or saliva repeatedly wet the fur; pale hair makes them especially noticeable. Yellowing across a larger area is less specific: the available veterinary sources do not establish one universal cause, so it should not automatically be blamed on tear stains.
Why does white fur turn brown or rust-colored?
Brown, reddish, or rust-colored staining commonly occurs where tear fluid or saliva repeatedly contacts fur. These fluids contain porphyrins, pigments associated with the breakdown of red blood cells. Dr. Jerry Klein, the American Kennel Club’s chief veterinary officer, describes porphyrin as “the chemical breakdown product associated with red blood cells.” The color builds up on damp hair and is more conspicuous against a white coat. A stain is a sign of repeated moisture on the fur, not a diagnosis on its own. The important question is why the area is staying wet.
Where is the discoloration, and what might it suggest?
Under the eyes
Overflowing tears can wet the hair beneath the eyes and leave reddish-brown marks. Hair direction or problems involving the eyes or tear drainage may contribute to persistent wetness. Runny eyes can also have several underlying causes, and long-standing moisture may be associated with a secondary yeast infection. Around the mouth or beard
Saliva can discolor fur where it repeatedly touches the muzzle. The mark may be cosmetic, but ongoing drooling or dampness deserves attention in context, especially if it is new or accompanied by other changes.
On the paws or other licked areas
Repeated licking or chewing can leave saliva stains. If the behavior persists, focus on what is prompting it instead of trying only to remove the color. PDSA: Saliva Staining and Overgrooming in Dogs

Yellowing across the coat
The veterinary sources cited here support reddish-brown staining from tears and saliva, but do not establish a single explanation for a generally yellow-looking coat. Its pattern, recent grooming or surface buildup, and any accompanying changes matter. Do not assume widespread yellowing is simply porphyrin staining; a new or extensive change is a reason to ask a veterinarian for an assessment.
What can you safely do about surface stains?
Gentle grooming may remove some surface buildup, but it will not correct abnormal tearing or persistent licking. For routine care:

- Wipe the stained fur gently with a warm, damp cloth or a pet-safe wipe.
- For the eye area, choose a product specifically intended for use around pets’ eyes and follow its directions; eye-cleaning pads are one option described for hygiene.
- If using shampoo, use one appropriate for the eye area and take care to keep it out of the eye.
- Avoid scrubbing irritated skin or using cosmetic whitening as a substitute for investigating a health problem.

Cleaning products are grooming aids, not treatments for the cause of excess tears or licking. The sources do not establish a reliably effective stain-removal brand or a product that treats the underlying problem.

When should a veterinarian check the staining?
Contact a veterinarian if staining starts suddenly, worsens aggressively, or comes with abnormal discharge or visible eye changes. Eye redness, cloudiness, squinting, or rubbing are also concerning changes to discuss promptly. Persistent wetness, irritation, odor, or repeated licking shifts the issue from coat appearance to finding the reason for the symptom.
