Search the person’s name, then check any relevant county registry as a separate step. A search with no result is not proof that someone has never harmed an animal or has passed a complete background check.
How do I check Florida’s animal abuse database?

Go to the FDLE website and select the Animal Cruelty Offender List.

On the list page, enter the person’s last name, first name, and, if known, middle name. Follow the page prompts and try reasonable name variations if you have them.

Check whether the county where the person lives—or where the adoption or sale will take place—has a separate animal-abuser registry. Treat a county search as a supplement to the state search.

If a result raises questions, contact the criminal-justice agency in the jurisdiction where the offense occurred. FDLE directs questions about a specific entry to that agency.
When assessing a result, verify that the listed person’s identifying details match the person you are considering. Do not assume a similar name alone establishes identity.

Is there a Florida animal abuser registry I can search?
Yes. Florida has a statewide FDLE Animal Cruelty Offender List, and some counties maintain their own registries. For example, Miami-Dade County describes its registry as a resource to help screen people during animal sales and adoptions. Marion County also describes a local registry and points to the statewide list. Local registries are separate resources, not substitutes for the FDLE list.

What does—and doesn’t—a search result establish?
FDLE describes its list as covering specified offenses under § 828.12, rather than every incident of animal harm or every possible animal-related offense. The agency says, “This information is updated upon the Florida Department of Law Enforcement receiving final disposition data.” A record may therefore depend on the relevant final disposition data reaching FDLE.
A name that does not appear is not proof that the person has no history of animal abuse, that no case exists, or that the person has passed a full background check. The list’s coverage is limited to its specified offenses and the data received by FDLE.

The 2026 version of Florida Statute § 828.12 describes information for the list that includes names and aliases, date of birth, race, counties of conviction, charges, case numbers, dispositions, identifying marks and tattoos, and a booking photograph. The statute’s text sets a posting deadline of “By January 1, 2027”; a note says a 2026 amendment uses “Before” instead of “By.” Because that date is in the future, do not assume the currently accessible list already displays every element described by the amended statutory requirement.

Three years from conviction for a first misdemeanor.

Five years from conviction for a first felony.

Ten years from conviction for a subsequent misdemeanor or felony.
The statute also provides a removal process for a person whose conviction was overturned or whose criminal history record was sealed. That person may petition FDLE with adequate documentation; the statute says FDLE must remove the information within 30 days after receiving the petition. The list is therefore neither permanent nor a comprehensive record of a person’s history.
What else should I check before adopting or buying?
Use a registry lookup as one screening step, alongside questions about the animal and the transaction. Ask the shelter, rescue, or seller about the animal’s history and health, and request applicable records in writing. Confirm that the person and animal details on the records correspond to the pet you are considering.
For a purchase from a covered pet dealer
Florida’s pet-dealer statute requires covered dealers to provide records of veterinary examinations, tests, and medications given before purchase, and to disclose financing terms before sale. The law also provides remedies in specified cases involving illness, disease, certain disorders, or misrepresentation, subject to notice and timing requirements. The statute defines which dealers and animals are covered, so these duties should not be assumed to apply identically to every private rehoming or adoption.
