Tracking animal movement can help conservationists identify critical habitat, migration routes and exposure to human threats—but a tag does not save a species by itself. Its data become useful when researchers connect them to a specific management decision and people act on the evidence.

How do scientists track animal movement?

Animal tracking is a set of methods, not one universal technology. NOAA Fisheries defines telemetry as using tags attached to animals to track movement and collect information about location, physiology, behavior and the environment. The right method depends on the animal, the habitat and the question being asked.

GPS and satellite telemetry

A GPS or satellite tag records locations and may also measure conditions such as temperature or dive depth. Depending on the device, information can be transmitted remotely or stored for later retrieval. For migratory leatherback turtles, NOAA describes using tag data to study seasonal distribution and time spent near the surface or deeper in the water. Those patterns can help researchers assess potential overlap with fishing activity and bycatch risk.

Acoustic telemetry

An attached or implanted transmitter emits a distinctive signal, which nearby receiver stations detect when a tagged animal passes within range. Receiver detections can reveal changes in an animal’s range associated with environmental conditions, recovery or habitat loss. Unlike GPS, acoustic telemetry depends on where receivers are placed and how far their signals reach; it does not provide continuous, global positioning.

Electronic tags in freshwater

Freshwater projects use a toolkit that can include miniaturized tags, fixed detection stations, coded transmitters, passive integrated transponder (PIT) systems and integrated sensors. Researchers may combine telemetry with other monitoring approaches, and validate how tags attach and perform for the species being studied. The USGS-hosted review “Tracking animals in freshwater with electronic tags: past, present and future” describes this evolving range of techniques.

Other measurements

Some telemetry systems collect physiological, behavioral or environmental measurements as well as movement data. NOAA notes that sensors for measures such as stomach temperature, water temperature and salinity are in development; these should not be confused with measurements established in every tracking project.

How can tracking animals help conservation?

A location record is most useful when it answers a practical question: where animals go, which places they depend on, when they encounter a threat or whether a monitoring program samples the population it is meant to represent.

  • Identify important places and routes. Repeated locations can help map seasonal distribution, migration corridors and areas used for feeding or breeding. That evidence can inform habitat protection or the placement and timing of conservation measures.
  • Assess exposure to human pressures. Researchers can compare animal movements with activities such as fishing to investigate where and when harmful interactions may occur. For leatherbacks, location, temperature and dive-depth data can help characterize potential exposure to fisheries.
  • Improve monitoring. Tracks can show whether a migration-count site provides information about the population trend managers want to understand.
  • Follow change. Detection patterns may help researchers investigate range changes associated with environmental conditions, recovery or habitat loss.

These are ways to produce evidence, not automatic conservation outcomes. Protection, policy and management decisions are what turn evidence into action.

Can tracking validate a wildlife monitoring site?

Yes. A 2025 study combined GPS tracking with migration counts to assess whether particular count locations reflected population trends. It found that Eilat was not a good site for estimating steppe-eagle population trends, while Batumi appeared more informative for black-kite demographic trends. The lesson is that a busy or convenient observation site is not necessarily representative of the population a conservation program intends to monitor. The study evaluated monitoring value; it does not show that the counts caused a population recovery. USGS summarizes the study here.

What can animal tracking data tell us—and what can it miss?

Tracks can be numerous and precise without being sufficient for a conservation decision. Researchers need to match the scale of the data to the scale of the question, account for location error that may accumulate in an analysis, and collect enough observations to support a useful conclusion. A fine-grained track of one animal, for example, does not by itself establish how an entire population uses a region.

A 2020 review by Todd E. Katzner and Raphael Arlettaz found that applied movement-ecology studies were not prominent and identified scale mismatch, compounding error and data paucity as barriers. As the authors put it, “Problems of scale mismatch, error compounding, and data paucity all create challenges that are relevant to the field of movement ecology but may be especially pertinent in applied situations.” The USGS-hosted review is available here.

Tracking can also be difficult for animals that are hard to access or spend time diving. NOAA describes combining telemetry with acoustic monitoring and remote platforms to help address observation gaps. A tracking project’s method should fit its target behavior and habitat rather than assume one technology works equally well everywhere.

Do tracking tags hurt animals, or stop working early?

Tag weight, attachment and power can affect an animal and how long a deployment yields data, so project teams must choose equipment and attachment methods appropriate to the species. A tag that stops transmitting does not necessarily indicate a device malfunction: deployment success can also depend on attachment, tracking, data acquisition and animal survival.

A 2025 USGS analysis of 2,745 dorsally mounted tags across 37 shorebird species reported that 71% of remote-upload deployments and 83% of archival deployments did not reach their expected duration. These figures describe those studied shorebird deployments—not a general failure rate for all animal tracking. Within the remote-upload deployments, solar power, satellite retrieval and leg-loop harnesses were associated with longer tracking. USGS provides the study details here.

How should researchers choose a tracking method?

There is no universal ranking: the best method depends on the study’s question, animal and field conditions. Relevant comparison points include:

  • Location precision and frequency: How accurately and how often must locations be recorded to answer the question?
  • Detection coverage: For receiver-based systems, where are stations located, and which areas can they detect?
  • Data retrieval: Does the project need remote, near-real-time uploads, or can data be stored and retrieved later?
  • Animal and attachment: Is the tag’s size, weight and attachment suitable for the species and behavior?
  • Duration and failure risk: How long must tracking continue, and what could limit the deployment?
  • Habitat and behavior: Is the animal on land, in freshwater or at sea—and does it dive, migrate or use hard-to-access areas?
  • Resources: What receiver network, field effort, data handling and follow-up are needed to answer the management question?

NOAA’s overview of telemetry and other technologies for protected-species conservation describes how teams combine approaches to study animal movement and conditions.

Can GPS tracking protect endangered species?

GPS tracking can contribute evidence that helps guide protection, such as where an animal travels or where it may encounter a threat. But tags alone cannot establish how much tracking reduces extinction risk, and the cited studies do not provide a global statistic for how much tracking has “saved the planet.” Conservation benefit depends on whether reliable, relevant findings inform effective decisions and action.
