How to Photograph Wildlife Safely Without Disturbing Animals

Photograph wildlife from a distance: check local rules, back away if an animal reacts, and use telephoto lenses or viewing optics instead of approaching.

When photographing wildlife, change your position—or accept a less close image—rather than make an animal change its behavior. Keep the distance required by the place you are visiting, and use a telephoto lens or viewing optics to frame animals from farther away. There is no single safe or legal distance for every species and location, so check the destination’s current rules before you go.

How far away should you be?

Follow the park, refuge, reserve, or other destination’s rules, including species-specific buffers and temporary closures. Distances are local requirements, not universal thresholds for when disturbance begins. For context, the National Park Service says many parks require at least 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from bears and wolves; it cites Olympic National Park as an example where the distance is 50 yards. Yellowstone National Park specifies 25 yards from other wildlife and 100 yards from bears or wolves. Check the current rules for your exact location and follow the stricter applicable requirement.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service gives a 200-yard buffer from shore in a particular coastal and seabird context. That is not a general land-wildlife distance. NPS guidance on respecting wildlife, Olympic National Park wildlife-viewing guidance, Yellowstone photography and wildlife-watching rules, and FWS wildlife-watching tips provide examples; verify current site rules before visiting.

How can you tell if you are disturbing an animal?

Use the animal’s response as a practical warning. The National Park Service says, “In general, if an animal reacts to your presence, you are too close.” If it changes its behavior or moves because of you, stop trying to get closer and increase your distance. Do not wait for a dramatic reaction before backing off.

For working in a variety of lighting conditions, the sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400 can be further expanded to ISO 12800

Never approach or pursue an animal for a picture. Do not feed, touch, call to, or otherwise provoke it. If an animal moves toward you, back away while maintaining the required buffer; do not try to hold your ground for a photograph.

How can you make a distant animal look closer?

Use optics rather than your feet. A telephoto or zoom lens can frame a photograph from an allowed position; binoculars and a spotting scope can help you observe an animal without approaching. As NPS puts it, “Use binoculars, a spotting scope, or a telephoto lens for a safe, close-up view.” FWS similarly recommends binoculars and spotting scopes to bring animals “closer” without disturbing them.

  • Telephoto or zoom lens: The direct option for photographing distant subjects. Confirm that a lens is compatible with your camera system.
  • Binoculars or spotting scope: Useful for observing and locating wildlife. They do not take photographs by themselves unless paired with suitable camera equipment.
  • Stable support: When practical, rest the camera on a stable surface and compose from where you are permitted to stand.

Equipment helps with framing, but it does not make a prohibited approach acceptable. Stay on permitted routes, obey barriers and closures, and do not leave a trail or viewing area for a better angle.

What should you check before you visit?

  1. Find the destination’s official rules. Check current minimum distances, closures, wildlife alerts, and any species-specific restrictions for the park, refuge, reserve, or other site.
  2. Plan your viewing position. Identify permitted routes and viewing areas so you can photograph without crossing barriers or moving closer than allowed.
  3. Prepare your camera and optics. Check compatibility and charge your camera; FWS also recommends bringing a spare battery and memory card.
  4. Plan for roadside safety. Use designated pullouts, and never block traffic or stop in an unsafe place for a photograph.

When is a good time to photograph wildlife?

Dawn or dusk can be useful times to look for wildlife, and morning or evening light may also suit photography. These are planning tips, not guarantees: activity varies with species, season, weather, and location. Choose a time that lets you observe from a permitted, safe position rather than following animals to get a shot.
