Feline Marfan syndrome has been molecularly characterized in only two reported sibling cats, so there is no established monitoring schedule, exercise prescription, or Marfan-specific home-safety plan. If your cat may have the condition, work with your veterinarian to assess its eyes and cardiovascular system, then tailor follow-up and daily care to the findings in that individual cat.
What is known about Marfan syndrome in cats?
A September 2026 report described two littermate cats with long limbs, lens luxation in both eyes, and dilation of the aortic root. Researchers identified the same homozygous splice-region variant in FBN1 in both cats. The variant altered how the gene was processed: exon 22 was skipped in 73% of transcripts, while a low level of normal transcript remained. FBN1 encodes fibrillin-1, a connective-tissue protein found in structures including blood vessels, bones, ligaments, skin, and eyes. The report also found disrupted and fractured elastic fibers in the ascending aorta of an affected cat. The primary report and Cornell’s account document these cases; two cats cannot establish the full range or usual course of the condition.
The variant was absent from a cohort of more than 1,000 cats in the study, but that finding is not a feline prevalence estimate. Cornell cites about 1 in 4,000 as the prevalence in people; that human figure does not tell us how common the condition is in cats.
What should vet visits cover?
Because the reported cats had both eye abnormalities and aortic root dilation, ask your veterinarian whether your cat needs evaluation of its eyes and cardiovascular system. The case report describes detailed clinical examinations and genetic sequencing, but the available sources do not establish a validated screening battery or a repeat-visit interval for other cats. Your veterinarian should set the tests and timing according to your cat’s examination and health.

Prepare for the appointment
- Bring your cat’s medical history and any relevant examination, imaging, or test records.
- Write down changes you have noticed, including when they began and whether they are getting worse.
- Ask which findings are confirmed, which organs should be evaluated, what changes warrant urgent contact, and when to return.
These questions can help you make an individual care plan; they are not a published feline Marfan checklist. As senior author Dr. Jacquelyn Evans told Cornell, “The findings may help veterinarians recognize similar cases in the future,” Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, September 22, 2026.
How much activity is appropriate?
The feline case report and Cornell account do not specify exercise limits, activity restrictions, or an exertion threshold. They do not support a particular amount of play, a blanket ban on jumping, or a prescribed exercise plan. If your cat has documented aortic or other cardiac findings, eye disease affecting vision, or mobility concerns, ask its veterinarian for advice suited to those findings. Do not assume human Marfan recommendations apply to cats.

Does the home need to be made safer?
No Marfan-specific home-safety checklist or tested intervention is described in the available feline reports. If your cat has reduced vision or a mobility problem, ask your veterinarian whether its environment should be adapted and which changes match the impairment. The right approach depends on what your cat can see and do; equipment such as ramps, barriers, or harnesses should not be treated as a proven Marfan treatment.
What if the cat has lens luxation?
Lens luxation—the displacement of the eye’s lens—was reported in both eyes of the sibling cats. A 2026 retrospective study of lens luxation in cats, not specifically cats with Marfan syndrome, reviewed 136 eyes from 115 cats. The study reported visual and normotensive status at follow-up in 12 of 13 eyes treated with intracapsular lens extraction as primary or secondary management, compared with 19 of 50 medically managed eyes. These are outcomes from a retrospective study, not a controlled comparison or a Marfan-specific treatment rule. The study also reported that transcorneal lens reduction was unsuccessful in its cohort.

A veterinary ophthalmologist can discuss whether medical management or surgery is appropriate for your cat. Relevant considerations include vision, comfort, pressure inside the eye, your ability to give medication, your cat’s overall health, follow-up needs, treatment burden, and cost. Do not start or change eye medication without direction from the prescribing veterinarian.
What does this mean for related cats?
The two affected cats were littermates and each had two altered copies of the reported FBN1 variant. That observation does not establish the risk to other cats, confirm that a clinical genetic test is generally available, or provide breeding guidance. If you are concerned about a related cat, ask your veterinarian whether consulting a veterinary genetics specialist is appropriate.
