A sudden weight gain or loss in a dog warrants veterinary assessment within 24 hours, even if your dog otherwise seems stable. Go to an emergency veterinary clinic now if the change comes with trouble breathing, collapse, pale or blue gums, severe weakness, a seizure, severe pain, a swollen or painful abdomen, or repeated attempts to vomit that produce nothing. These are triage recommendations, not a diagnosis: the accompanying signs determine whether your dog needs immediate care.
How quickly should your dog be seen?

Other emergency signs include profuse vomiting or diarrhea, heavy or uncontrolled bleeding, and possible toxin ingestion. Merck’s emergency care overview and what-to-do guidance cover immediate steps. If your dog is worsening, do not wait for the 24-hour assessment window.
Does a particular amount of weight loss make it an emergency?
There is no single percentage that tells you whether a dog needs emergency care. VCA describes unplanned loss of more than 10% of normal body weight as clinically significant when fluid loss or dehydration did not cause it; faster loss is more concerning. That figure is a reason to arrange veterinary evaluation, not a threshold to wait for—and it does not override urgent symptoms. Read VCA’s guidance on abnormal weight loss.
A dog can lose weight while eating normally. The scale alone cannot identify why: possibilities include changes in calorie intake or energy needs, impaired digestion or absorption, and nutrient or fluid loss through vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive urination. VCA lists a range of potential causes, including feeding or diet issues, diabetes, hypoadrenocorticism, and cancer. These are possibilities for a veterinarian to investigate, not diagnoses you can make from weight and appetite alone.

Why apparent weight gain may need attention
A rapid change on the scale—or a suddenly enlarged abdomen—does not necessarily mean your dog has gained body fat. Abdominal enlargement, edema, or fluid accumulation can also affect appearance or weight, and an examination is needed to distinguish causes. In clinical patients receiving fluid therapy, AAHA lists acute weight gain alongside respiratory signs and edema as possible signs of fluid overload; this is not a home diagnostic threshold. A distended abdomen with repeated unproductive retching is particularly urgent because it may indicate GDV. Treat that combination as an emergency rather than ordinary weight gain.

What to record and tell the clinic
If your dog is stable, gather what you know before calling. Do not delay emergency transport to weigh your dog or complete a checklist.
- Approximate amount of weight gained or lost, when the change began, and previous weights with dates if available.
- Appetite and missed meals; the amount and type of food; treats, table food, supplements, and food used to give medication.
- Changes in thirst, urination, stool, vomiting, diarrhea, energy, mobility, breathing, or abdominal shape.
- Current diet, recent food or household changes, medications, known health conditions, and possible toxin exposure.

What the veterinarian may assess
A veterinarian can compare the reported weight trend with a physical examination, including body condition and muscle condition. AAHA describes body-condition assessment through fat coverage, waist shape, and abdominal tuck; the number on a scale alone is not a diagnosis. Depending on the history and examination, the veterinarian may recommend blood and urine tests, radiographs, or abdominal ultrasound. The appropriate work-up depends on the individual dog.
Keep a weight record if your veterinarian recommends monitoring, but do not use a home scale, body-condition chart, food, or supplement to decide whether unexplained change is safe to manage without veterinary advice.
