Introduce walking gear gradually: let your puppy investigate it, reward calm behavior, and build up to brief wear before attaching a leash. Keep sessions easy and positive; if your puppy is worried or struggling, stop and try again another day.
1. Let your puppy investigate the gear
Put the collar or harness on the floor nearby and give your puppy room to sniff it, look at it, or walk away. Reward calm curiosity with a treat or praise. Don’t move the gear toward a puppy who is retreating or showing worry. RSPCA Australia recommends giving puppies the choice to investigate or move away; if your puppy remains worried, remove the item and try another day (RSPCA Australia’s puppy guidance).
2. Build up to wearing a collar or harness
Start with a few minutes
When your puppy is comfortable around the gear, put it on gently and reward relaxed behavior. RSPCA Australia suggests starting with “a few minutes or so,” then taking the item off. Repeat later and lengthen the wearing time gradually, stopping while your puppy is still comfortable. For some puppies, getting used to the gear may take a few days.
Choose equipment that fits the puppy
A comfortable, correctly adjusted harness can reduce pressure on the neck and may make it harder for a dog to slip free. A collar is still useful for identification and should also be introduced as something comfortable to wear. There is no single best choice for every puppy; fit and comfort matter more than choosing one type for all dogs.

For a collar, RSPCA Australia’s rule of thumb is that two fingers should slide comfortably underneath. Check collar and harness fit at least a few times a week while your puppy is growing, and whenever the gear seems tight or loose. Choose a leash and clip light enough for your puppy: a thick leash or large clip may be too heavy for a small dog, while the equipment still needs to be strong enough for the dog using it (RSPCA Australia’s fitting guidance).
3. Practise walking before adding the leash
Begin in a safe, enclosed area. Reward your puppy for walking near you without a leash. Once that is going well, attach a suitable leash and practise for short periods. Reward your puppy for staying close with slack in the leash; frequent small rewards help make walking near you worthwhile (RSPCA Australia’s puppy exercise guidance).

4. What to do when your puppy pulls
Don’t pull back, jerk the leash, or yell. If your puppy pulls, stop and stand still. When your puppy comes back near you and the leash loosens, reward that moment and continue. RSPCA Australia describes this as standing “like a tree” until the puppy returns beside you and the leash slackens (RSPCA Australia’s leash guidance).

End the session rather than forcing the collar or harness on. At the next attempt, make the step easier: set the gear down, let your puppy approach voluntarily, and reward a small sign of calm interest. Keep practice brief, and stop if worry returns. Scolding or using leash pressure to make a puppy comply can make the experience more frightening. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training and advises against aversive methods, including leash corrections and physical punishment (AVSAB position statements).

If your puppy’s fear persists or you are unsure how to fit the equipment, ask your veterinarian or a qualified reward-based trainer for individual advice. A puppy’s size, health, temperament, and local identification rules can affect what is appropriate.
