This is most relevant for an unspayed female after a heat cycle, but toy behavior alone cannot establish the cause. Her history and any physical or behavioral changes matter.
What does it mean when a dog mothers a toy?
Owners may describe carrying or licking a toy as “feeding” it. Veterinary sources describe these actions as mothering behavior; they do not establish that a dog understands the toy to be a real puppy. Dogs can also carry toys for reasons unrelated to a medical condition, and the behavior by itself does not identify why a particular dog is doing it.
How pseudopregnancy can lead to toy nurturing
Pseudopregnancy is a hormone-related state that can occur in female dogs after estrus (heat), whether or not they are pregnant. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine describes it as a normal physiological process and notes that a dog may mother toys, nest, or show aggression. The ovaries produce hormones after estrus regardless of whether pregnancy occurred, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.
Other possible signs include restlessness, nesting, physical changes resembling pregnancy, and milk production. Signs vary between dogs. A dog may also guard a toy or show aggression while mothering it; do not assume every dog carrying a toy is experiencing pseudopregnancy.

What to do if your dog is mothering toys
Consider her history and other signs
Note whether she is unspayed and recently had a heat cycle, and watch for nesting, milk production, discomfort, or other changes. If she could have mated, contact a veterinarian to assess the possibility of actual pregnancy rather than trying to tell from her behavior. VCA says ultrasound or X-rays can be used to assess pregnancy.
Keep management calm
UC Davis says removing toys and preventing self-nursing may help with pseudopregnancy. If your dog guards an object, do not confront her or forcibly take it; ask a veterinarian for guidance, particularly if the behavior is escalating or causing distress.

Know when to contact a veterinarian
Seek veterinary advice if your dog seems unwell or distressed, has physical signs such as milk production, may be pregnant, or is showing troublesome behavior. PDSA identifies mastitis as a possible complication, so physical symptoms merit attention rather than being attributed to toy nurturing alone.

VCA reports that many mild cases subside in approximately 14 to 21 days. That is a typical course, not a reason to wait if your dog is uncomfortable, unwell, or showing concerning physical signs.
