Emergency vet visit checklist
Get your pet there safely
Use a secure, well-ventilated carrier for a cat or small dog. For a larger dog, use a short leash and harness rather than a retractable leash. If your pet is injured or unstable, focus on safe handling and movement; call the hospital for help getting your pet inside if needed. A carrier, ventilated box, blanket, or stretcher may be appropriate depending on the situation and professional guidance.
Bring medical records if they are easy to get
Bring recent test results, referral information, or other relevant records if they are readily available. An emergency hospital may not have access to your regular veterinarian’s chart, so ask your regular clinic to send records when feasible. Don’t delay urgent care to find them.
List medicines and supplements
Write down your pet’s current medicines and supplements, including doses and schedules if known. Labeled containers or clear photos of the labels can help staff identify the exact products.

Write a brief symptom timeline
Note the main symptoms, when they began, how they have changed, and any possible exposure or home treatment. A concise account can help the team understand what happened and when.
If a toxin or foreign substance may be involved
Call a veterinarian, emergency hospital, or poison hotline promptly for direction. If it is safe, bring the product container or take a clear photo of its label and ingredients. Note the substance, estimated amount, and time of exposure. Be ready to provide your pet’s species, breed, age, sex, weight, and signs.

What to expect at the emergency hospital
Staff may triage pets according to medical severity, so arrival order does not necessarily determine who is seen first. A stable pet may wait while more critical patients are treated. The clinician may ask when the symptoms began, review your pet’s history, examine them, and discuss recommended tests, treatment options, and estimates. The emergency team may also coordinate follow-up with your regular veterinarian.
