To stop leash pulling, teach your dog that a slack leash makes the walk move forward and leads to things worth exploring. Start somewhere quiet, reward your dog for walking near you or checking in, and pause whenever the leash goes tight. Resume when your dog turns back and the leash loosens. Build up gradually; loose-leash walking does not require a formal heel.
What counts as loose-leash walking?
The goal is a leash that hangs loose while your dog walks near you, not a dog held in a precise heel position at every step. Your dog can look around and sniff; the key is that pulling does not move the walk forward.
How to teach your dog not to pull
1. Start somewhere easy
Begin indoors, in a yard, or in another quiet place where your dog can focus. Use a standard leash and have small, appealing rewards ready. Keep the first session short and upbeat.
2. Reward the behavior you want
Mark and reward your dog for walking near you with a loose leash, looking back to check in, or voluntarily returning toward you. Reward often at first so your dog can learn which choices keep the walk going. Food is one option; praise, play, and access to the environment can also be rewarding. A dog training treat pouch can make treats convenient to carry, but it is not required.

3. Pause when the leash tightens
When your dog pulls, stop moving forward. Do not yank the leash or drag your dog back. Wait for your dog to turn toward you or otherwise create slack, then praise or reward and continue. Expect to stop frequently at the beginning.
4. Make sniffing part of the reward
After a short stretch of walking with a slack leash, let your dog sniff or explore. Start with only a few successful steps before the break, then gradually ask for longer stretches. This makes forward movement and access to interesting places rewards for walking without pulling.

5. Add distractions gradually
Once your dog can focus in a quiet setting, practice outdoors and slowly add more challenging sights, smells, people, and other distractions. If pulling becomes frequent again, make the task easier by returning to a quieter area or a shorter stretch between rewards.
6. Keep the rule consistent
If pulling sometimes gets your dog closer to something they want, it can keep paying off. Ask household members and dog walkers to follow the same basic rule: pause when the leash tightens, and move forward again when it is slack.

Choose equipment that supports the training
Start with a standard leash
A standard leash is a practical starting point for teaching the skill. The American Kennel Club warns that a retractable leash can reward pulling because the dog gets more leash and freedom by pulling. It advises waiting until a dog walks politely on a standard six-foot leash before using a retractable one. AKC’s guidance on stopping leash pulling explains this concern.
Consider other gear as management, not a shortcut
AKC mentions a training harness or headcollar as possible support for a determined puller while polite walking skills develop. Suitability and fit vary, and the available guidance does not establish one design as best for every dog. Ask a veterinarian or qualified reward-based trainer for individual advice if you are unsure. Whatever equipment you use, continue teaching the dog what to do when the leash is slack.

Why use reward-based training?
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) says its 2021 Humane Dog Training Position Statement remains its current authoritative view. It recommends reward-based methods for dog training and says aversive methods—including leash corrections, prong collars, and choke chains—should not be used. AVSAB states: “There is no evidence that aversive training is necessary for dog training or behavior modification.” Read the AVSAB Humane Dog Training Position Statement and its position statement resources.
Food is not the only possible reward. If you are worried about luring your dog with treats, reward the behavior you want when it happens rather than requiring the dog to follow food at every step. The AVSAB position statement resources include guidance on food luring.

General loose-leash practice is not an individualized behavior plan. If pulling comes with fear, reactivity, or safety concerns, consult your veterinarian and a qualified reward-based dog professional. A trainer or class can also provide hands-on coaching if you are having trouble making progress.
