Prepare one quiet room with a door that closes, secure windows and exits, and set out food, water, a separate litter tray, bedding, a scratching surface, and safe places to hide. Keep the cat there at first and let it explore or approach people at its own pace; if you have other pets, introduce them gradually.
Choose and secure a quiet room
Pick a low-traffic room where the door closes securely. Starting with the whole house can overwhelm a newly rescued cat and give it more opportunities to escape, as the RSPCA explains.
- Secure windows and any other routes outdoors before the cat arrives.
- Remove breakable objects, toxic substances, loose cords, and other hazards the cat could reach.
- Block narrow or unsafe gaps where a frightened cat could become trapped, while keeping at least one safe place to retreat.
Set out the essentials
Prepare the room before carrying the cat in. Use familiar food if the rescue organization can tell you what the cat has been eating, and follow its instructions about health, medication, and care.
- Food and fresh water: Place bowls apart from the litter tray as much as the room allows.
- Litter tray: Choose an accessible spot away from the food and water.
- Resting place: Provide comfortable bedding. If the room allows, include a stable elevated place where the cat can rest.
- Scratching surface: Add a scratching post or another suitable surface.
- Hiding places: Leave the carrier open, or provide a cardboard box or another safe, accessible hide. Put a private option in a quiet spot away from the doorway.
- Toys: Add them if the cat shows interest; they are optional, not a substitute for a quiet retreat.
These basics do not require a special cat den: Wisconsin Humane Society notes that an open carrier or cardboard box can work as a hiding place. Arrange the resources so the cat is not expected to eat, drink, toilet, and sleep in one cramped area.

Bring the cat in without pressure
- Close the room door and make sure exterior access is secure.
- Set the carrier on the floor, open its door, and give the cat time and space to come out. Do not pull the cat out to make it explore.
- Keep the room calm. Sit quietly and speak softly; let the cat decide whether to approach.
Hiding can be part of settling in. Do not drag the cat from its hiding place or carry it around the home to meet people. If it is too shy to eat, Cats Protection suggests placing food closer to the hiding place and then leaving the room. Follow the rescue organization’s advice if you are unsure about the cat’s routine or needs.
Let behavior—not a fixed timetable—guide the next step
Cats differ in how quickly they settle. Advice from shelters and welfare organizations does not establish one schedule that suits every cat, so avoid treating a particular number of days as a deadline. Look for signs such as eating, using the available resources, exploring voluntarily, and staying relaxed around the people involved. Expand access gradually when the cat seems comfortable in its room.

Use the closed safe-room door to give the newcomer a separate base while it adjusts. The SF SPCA advises allowing a new cat time to settle before face-to-face meetings; Seattle Humane describes a gradual introduction approach that should be guided by the animals’ behavior rather than a fixed timetable.

- Start with separation: Keep the newcomer in its room and maintain the resident pet’s usual routine.
- Build familiarity through scent: Swap bedding or otherwise let the animals encounter each other’s scent without meeting.
- Try controlled contact only when both seem comfortable: Progress to visual contact and then brief shared-room time at a pace that suits the animals.
- Slow down if either animal is agitated: End the interaction and return to an earlier, calmer step. Do not leave them together unsupervised until they are reliably relaxed.
