There is no single enclosure or menu that suits every bear: species, age, health, history, season, and individual behavior all shape what good care looks like.
Space, shelter, and choice
Bears are powerful, inquisitive animals that need substantial space for daily activity and environments that offer physical challenges. A well-designed habitat provides opportunities to move, explore, climb or dig where appropriate, and rest safely. It also gives each bear meaningful choices about where to spend time and whether to be visible to other bears or visitors.
Shelter should suit the bear and the local climate, with appropriate indoor areas, dens, and nesting options. BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina, for example, describes bears choosing among self-dug dens, artificial dens, and indoor spaces. That is one sanctuary’s approach, not a universal checklist or required design.
GFAS’s detailed December 2019 Standards for Bear Sanctuaries discuss indoor and outdoor access, shelter, ground and plantings, dens, and water features. They explicitly do not address the unique needs of polar bears and giant pandas. Their illustrative space examples should not be treated as universal legal or welfare minimums.

Food tailored to the bear
A sanctuary should provide a balanced diet adapted to the bear’s species and individual condition, with veterinary guidance. Diets need periodic review by a veterinarian or qualified nutritionist, and caregivers should check that bears sharing open spaces can all get enough food. A sample menu cannot stand in for an individual feeding plan; appropriate foods and needs vary among bear species and animals.
How food is offered matters, too. Distributing or hiding food can encourage bears to search and forage rather than simply eat from a predictable presentation. FOUR PAWS describes adapting food seasonally and using hidden or scattered food for the brown bears in its care; those practices illustrate one facility’s approach, not a general diet prescription.

Enrichment that supports natural behavior
Useful enrichment creates safe opportunities for species-typical activity, exploration, and problem-solving. Depending on the bear and habitat, that can include opportunities to dig, climb, investigate, or work to find food. BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina describes food-hidden objects and activities intended to encourage digging, climbing, patience, and problem-solving.
Care staff should assess each enrichment method for the individual bear, the enclosure, and any safety risks. An item that suits one animal or setting may not suit another; the cited sanctuary guidance does not establish a universally safe consumer product.

Social contact managed with care
Whether bears should share space is an individual husbandry decision, not a rule that all bears belong in groups or alone. Bears can be dangerously aggressive toward other bears. Compatibility may be affected by season, breeding context, available space, and competition for food.
Experienced bear-care staff should plan introductions and housing, watch how animals respond, and adjust arrangements when behavior or circumstances call for it. A habitat needs enough space and retreat options to support safe management of the bears living there.

Daily observation and veterinary care
Thriving depends on more than a good enclosure. Trained caregivers should monitor and record each bear’s health, diet, and behavior, while qualified wildlife veterinarians provide appropriate care and preventive-health planning. BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina reports daily observation and record-keeping, along with regular checks by wildlife-medicine veterinarians.
The GFAS 2019 bear standards describe a preventive medicine program that includes quarantine, parasite surveillance and control, immunization, contraception, infectious-disease screening, dental prophylaxis, and periodic review of diet and husbandry. The exact protocols depend on the bear and facility; the 2019 document is a prior version, not the current application standard.

Seasonal needs and winter dormancy
Some bears experience seasonal dormancy, but species and individual needs differ. Where appropriate, caregivers can provide suitable shelter and nesting material and adjust feeding seasonally with professional guidance. FOUR PAWS describes dens, straw nests, and seasonal feeding for the brown bears it cares for; individual feeding decisions belong with the bear’s veterinary and care team.
Do not restrict food or water to make a bear hibernate. GFAS’s December 2019 standards state: “Hibernation is never forced by restricting food or water as this may result in disease or death through dehydration and starvation.”
What sanctuary standards and visitor policies can tell you
GFAS accreditation and verification standards are voluntary in general, but form the basis of its accreditation and verification. GFAS says its standards are living documents and has revised them to distinguish required practices from recommended or preferred approaches. Its January 2023 FAQ says the Bear Appendix became the standard for new bear accreditation and verification applicants on January 15, 2023, and must be read alongside the General Animal Care and Operations Standards. Check GFAS’s standards page for the current versions.
GFAS eligibility materials describe expectations that include ethical acquisition and disposition, animal-care standards, and policies on breeding. Its no-captive-breeding policy has a stated exception for release programs. GFAS also says a sanctuary does not have to offer tours: “GFAS does not require sanctuaries or rescue centers to offer tours or other public visitation programs.” If visits are offered, they should be guided, educational, and structured to protect animal welfare and visitor safety. Visitor access should not compromise a bear’s ability to withdraw from view or involve direct contact.

When assessing a sanctuary, useful questions include whether it follows applicable standards, offers retreat choices, provides qualified veterinary care and documented preventive health, individualizes diets, monitors behavior and enrichment, and makes careful social-housing decisions. GFAS says its assessment can include questionnaires, site visits, and interviews.
