Support bear rescue by first checking a sanctuary’s current standards and practices, then choose a clear way to help: donate to a named recipient, offer skills the organization needs, share responsible information, or visit only if the experience prioritizes animal welfare and safety. A “sanctuary” label, a moving rescue story, or a close-up encounter is not proof of good care.
How to assess a bear sanctuary before supporting it
Start with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) accreditation and verification directory, and read the facility’s own explanation of its status. GFAS says these designations are voluntary and based on meeting established standards; a listing is useful evidence, not a substitute for checking current information and practices.

GFAS standards address operations as well as animal care, including governance, finance, staffing, safety, and outreach. Animal-care standards differ by the kinds of animals a facility houses. See the GFAS standards and its definitions of accreditation and verification to understand what a designation means.
Questions that reveal how a facility works
- Where do the bears come from, and how does the organization ensure acquisition is legal, ethical, and in the animals’ best interests?
- What veterinary care do the bears receive, and what are the organization’s plans for their long-term care or release where appropriate?
- How are staff and volunteers trained, and what emergency procedures are in place?
- Do the facility’s activities avoid creating demand for captive bears? GFAS says true sanctuaries generally do not intentionally breed animals in captivity, subject to limited exceptions, and that acquisition should not encourage commercial trade.
- What does the organization’s current accreditation or verification cover, and when was that status last confirmed?
These are questions for the organization; there is no single answer that applies to every bear or facility. GFAS’s position statements explain its principles on acquisition and other sanctuary practices. Because status and standards can change, check the directory and the facility’s own current information before recommending it.

Choose a way to help that fits your resources
GFAS notes that donating and volunteering are popular routes, but they are not the only ones. The most suitable option depends on what the facility needs, what you can offer, and whether its practices are transparent and welfare-focused.
| Option | Best fit | Check before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Donate | People who can give money to a clearly identified organization | Confirm the recipient, current giving terms, and any restrictions. |
| Volunteer | People with useful skills and time to contribute | Ask about the role, training, supervision, and safety requirements. |
| Share information or report a concern | People who can raise awareness or document a possible welfare problem safely | Use responsible sources and contact the relevant organization; do not trespass or confront people. |
| Visit | Travelers considering an educational sanctuary visit | Check that the experience protects animal welfare and safety and does not involve feeding or direct contact. |
Donate to a clear recipient
Choose the organization deliberately and check its current donation page for the recipient, terms, and any restrictions. GFAS describes one-time, monthly, and tribute giving, as well as a Sanctuary Giving Donation Jar for listed facilities. GFAS says donations through the jar go directly to sanctuaries, minus payment-handling fees. Its How to Help page explains these options.
FOUR PAWS also invites donations to support its bear-rescue work. It says rescue costs include ongoing veterinary care, species-appropriate food, and care for an animal’s lifetime; actual costs vary with factors such as distance, health, and enclosure needs. Its bear-rescue information describes this work. These sources do not establish comparable cost-effectiveness figures for different ways to help.
Volunteer with the right skills and safeguards
Not every useful volunteer role involves animals. GFAS suggests offering skills such as writing, photography, accounting, web development, and event planning, and looking for a program that fits your experience. Openings and requirements are facility-specific, so ask what the work involves before committing.

GFAS’s 2022 bear standards appendix specifies appropriate supervision by a fully trained bear caregiver for bear-related work. Clarify role boundaries, training, supervision, and safety arrangements; do not assume a volunteer position includes or permits direct contact with bears.
Share awareness and report concerns safely
FOUR PAWS encourages supporters to share information about bear mistreatment and choose animal-friendly travel. If you encounter a bear kept in conditions you suspect are improper, document what you can safely and contact the organization. Do not trespass, handle an animal, or confront those responsible.
Visit only when welfare comes first
A visit is optional: GFAS says tours are not required for sanctuaries. Where a facility offers visits, guided educational programs may be acceptable under GFAS criteria when welfare and safety are protected. Before booking, check the facility’s visitor rules and look for clear limits on proximity, feeding, and contact.
The FOUR PAWS Prishtina bear sanctuary describes guided educational tours in which visitors do not feed or directly contact bears, and says bears can retreat from view. That is the policy described by this particular facility, not a universal rule or an independent audit. World Animal Protection also offers a bear sanctuary visitor checklist to help travelers assess an experience.
Make the decision on evidence, not appearances
Before donating, volunteering, recommending a facility, or booking a visit, weigh the same practical questions: Is the recipient and its current status clear? Are its animal-care and operating practices explained? Does the opportunity fit your skills and time? Are welfare and safety safeguards explicit? For visits, is the experience educational without feeding or direct contact? These checks help distinguish support that benefits rescue and care from activities that may prioritize access or spectacle.
