Longhaired Dachshunds can need more brushing than smooth Dachshunds, especially when their coat is thicker. Smooths are generally lower-maintenance, but both varieties need routine care such as nail trimming. The difference is chiefly coat length and distribution—not a proven difference in shedding, grooming cost, or time.
How do the coats differ?
Smooth Dachshunds
The Dachshund Club of America’s breed standard describes the smooth coat as short, smooth, and shining. The standard was approved November 14, 2017, and took effect January 1, 2018.
Longhaired Dachshunds
The same standard describes the longhaired coat as sleek and glistening, often slightly wavy. The hair is longer under the neck, across the forechest and underside, on the ears, behind the legs, and on the tail. The longer hair is concentrated in these areas rather than being uniformly long over the whole dog.
Do longhaired Dachshunds need more grooming?
Often, they need more brushing. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says longhaired Dachshunds may need more frequent brushing depending on coat thickness; it does not set one universal brushing schedule for the variety. Pay particular attention to the longer-haired areas during regular grooming, and adjust brushing to your dog’s coat and tolerance.

Smooth Dachshunds are generally easier to maintain. AKC calls them relatively “wash and wear,” while the Dachshund Club of America’s Dachshund Handbook, revised July 2013, says a smooth-coated pet needs little grooming. It recommends occasional bathing and frequent brushing. A rubber curry comb can help polish a smooth coat and remove loose hair, according to AKC’s general home-grooming guidance; choose a tool your dog tolerates.
What care do both coats need?
- Brush according to the coat. Long coats may call for more frequent brushing, with needs varying by thickness. Smooth coats usually need less involved coat care.
- Keep up with nails. AKC recommends monthly nail trimming for all Dachshunds.
- Use bathing as needed. The Dachshund Club of America handbook recommends occasional bathing for a smooth-coated pet.
AKC’s general grooming article notes that daily brushing often suits long-coated breeds, but that is broad guidance, not a Dachshund-specific rule. If you are unsure what works for your individual dog, a groomer can offer coat-specific advice.

Does a longhaired Dachshund shed more?
There is no established coat-by-coat comparison in the cited breed-club and AKC sources. AKC characterizes Dachshunds as moderate shedders and says they are not hypoallergenic, but this does not show that longhaired Dachshunds shed more—or that smooth Dachshunds shed less. Neither coat should be treated as a no-shed option.

The available sources do not provide a head-to-head comparison of grooming time or cost. Longhaired dogs may need more brushing, but that alone does not establish a universal difference in expense or total care time. Coat thickness and the individual dog’s needs matter.
