Set up separate spaces first, let the animals get used to one another’s scent, then move to brief visual and direct meetings only while everyone remains comfortable. Keep them apart whenever you cannot supervise. There is no reliable calendar for friendship: let the animals’ behavior determine the pace.
Before the new dog comes home
Consider the animals’ temperaments, ages, health, energy levels and past experiences with other species. A dog that plays roughly may injure a kitten or an older cat; a dog strongly inclined to chase may be an unsafe match for a fearful cat. Ask the shelter or rescue about the dog’s history, and discuss household fit with your veterinarian or a qualified trainer.
Prepare separate areas before allowing the animals to share space. A resident cat needs a dog-free room with food, water, litter, bedding and a hiding place. Give the new dog a separate, adequately sized settling area; confinement in a cramped space can add frustration. A sturdy pet gate or exercise pen can help maintain separation while allowing controlled exposure.
Keep the cat’s retreat routes open and provide sturdy elevated places, such as a cat tree, that the dog cannot reach. Give the dog time to decompress in its own space after arrival instead of adding an immediate greeting to the stress of a new home.

Introducing a dog to a resident cat
1. Exchange scents first
Swap bedding or place a cloth carrying one animal’s scent in the other’s area. Let each animal investigate—or avoid—the item voluntarily. Cats Protection recommends repeating scent exchanges daily and moving on when neither animal shows much reaction.
2. Let them see each other through a barrier
Use a secure gate, reinforced screen, glass door or another barrier that prevents contact. Begin with a short session. Cats Protection suggests starting at five minutes, repeating sessions over several days and increasing the time gradually only while both animals remain relaxed. Let the cat leave or retreat; do not carry it toward the dog.

3. Arrange a controlled, leashed meeting
When both animals can remain calm while separated by the barrier, try a brief direct meeting. Keep the dog on a dog leash for controlled introductions, far enough away that it cannot reach the cat. When possible, have one person responsible for each animal. Make sure the cat can leave, hide or reach a high perch. Do not restrain the cat or put it in a carrier for the greeting.
Reward the dog for calm behavior and for turning attention back to its handler. Use simple cues, keep the session easy to end, and never force either animal to approach.

4. Repeat and adjust access gradually
Continue short, supervised sessions and increase access only while both animals stay at ease. If either has a significant reaction, calmly separate them and return to scent exchange or barrier viewing. Cats Protection cautions that it is easier to manage a controlled introduction than to repair a damaged relationship; do not expect the pets to sort it out themselves.
Know when to slow down
Look at the whole pattern of behavior rather than relying on a single signal. A cat that backs away, flattens its ears, widens its pupils, hisses, swipes or hides may need more space. Changes to ordinary routines—such as eating less or not using the litter box normally—also warrant attention.

- EXTRA TALL CAT GATE FOR JUMPERS: Adjustable from 47.2 to 86.6 inches high, this indoor pet gate creates a taller doorway barrier for agile cats, active jumpers and multi-pet households. Ideal for helping manage room-to-room access during introductions, feeding or everyday separation.
- PRESSURE MOUNTED FOR DOORWAYS: Designed for openings from 27.5 to 37.8 inches wide. The pressure-mounted setup installs without drilling for standard doorway use. Measure the top, middle and bottom of your opening before ordering and use the narrowest measurement to confirm fit.
- 1.38-INCH NARROW BAR SPACING: Closely spaced vertical bars help reduce opportunities for adult cats to squeeze through while still allowing pets to see and smell one another. Especially useful for cat introductions, foster setups and controlled indoor pet zones. Supervise very small kittens.
- WALK-THROUGH DOOR FOR DAILY ACCESS: The integrated door allows adults to move between rooms without taking down the entire gate. A double-lock design helps keep the door closed during everyday use while maintaining convenient access for people.
- ADJUSTABLE FOR YOUR SPACE: Multiple height sections allow the gate to adapt to different doorway heights, making it useful for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and other indoor spaces. Tighten pressure points evenly during setup and periodically recheck the gate after regular use.
A dog may be worried or overly interested if it lowers its tail, shows the whites of its eyes, growls, vocalizes, pulls, stares fixedly, reacts strongly to the cat’s movement or tries to chase. Fixation, lunging, snapping, chasing or an inability to redirect are safety concerns, not signs to push through.
A hiss or growl is a warning that the animal needs distance; do not punish it. If a chase or fight starts, use a physical barrier to separate the animals rather than reaching between them with your hands. Then reassess the setup and resume only at an easier, slower stage.

- Easy to Install: This dog gate measures 29 x 38 inches and fits gate widths from 32 to 35 inches. Installation is simple—just attach four hooks on both sides of the gate and use the four elastic hooks on the mesh to secure it firmly in place
- Tips: Please measure the installation area carefully before purchasing, and reserve 1–2 inches of extra space for the hooks to ensure proper installation. Please note that this product is a mesh pet gate (fabric screen), not a rigid or hard gate
- Dog Mesh Gates: Our mesh gates are suitable for most dogs and can serve as isolation gates to create a secure, enclosed area where you and your family can relax and enjoy time with your furry friends. They also work well for keeping pets in designated spaces to stop them from roaming freely, helping encourage the development of positive habits
- Upgraded Material: Our pet gate uses sturdy hook materials and damage-free tape, ensuring a firm hold on the pet net without breaking off. The net itself is made from strong tensile fiber, which can withstand pets’ grasping and biting without tearing
- Versatile Usage: Our pet gate can serve in a variety of settings, including staircases, doors, corridors, aisles, and even near fireplaces. The included hooks can be firmly fixed to flat, solid walls or wooden railings, making installation a breeze. Please note that this gate is not suitable for application on wallpaper, wet walls, dusty surfaces, or rugged walls
Keep pets separated when you cannot supervise
Use separate areas whenever nobody can closely watch the animals. Do not leave them together unattended until they have shown consistently calm, safe behavior and you are confident they can relax together. American Humane Society says adjustment may take days for some dog-cat pairs and several weeks or longer for others; it notes that many experts recommend waiting about a month before unsupervised interactions. Treat that month as a cautious example, not a deadline or guarantee.
If the resident pet is another dog or another species
Before adopting, assess whether the new dog’s temperament and energy fit the existing household. Ask the shelter, rescue, veterinarian or trainer about known prior experiences. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises considering whether an incoming dog will get along with household pets and consulting a veterinarian or dog trainer about introducing a puppy to its new animal family.
For dog-dog introductions and pairings with birds, rabbits or other companion animals, use the same basic safeguards: separate spaces, close supervision, controlled exposure, calm reinforcement and a willingness to stop when any animal shows distress. The detailed staged guidance available here is strongest for dog-cat introductions, so seek species-specific advice for a high-risk pairing. A dog’s past comfort with one individual animal does not establish that it will behave the same way with another.
When to get professional help
Contact a veterinarian if an animal’s behavior changes significantly, since a medical issue can cause or worsen behavior problems. Seek qualified behavior support if fear, aggression or fixation persists, or if you cannot safely manage the introductions.
