To find a Mudi puppy responsibly, start with the Mudi Club of America’s breeder referral, then verify the breeder, parent dogs, health records, rearing environment, and written contract for yourself. Choosing a puppy is a matter of matching an individual dog to your home—not picking by color or relying on one brief temperament impression.

Is a Mudi a good fit for your home?

The Mudi Club of America describes the breed as an “extremely versatile, intelligent, alert, agile all-purpose Hungarian farm dog.” Its standard characterizes the temperament as “Alert, energetic, intelligent, biddable, adaptable and always enthusiastic about any job that needs to be done.” The club’s standard page says the standard took effect August 4, 2025. (Mudi Club of America breed standard)

Those working-dog descriptions are useful prompts for an honest conversation about your daily routine. Consider whether you can provide regular activity, structured training, and enrichment, and whether an alert dog suits your household and neighborhood. The standard also describes the Mudi as sensibly suspicious in its watchdog temperament; ask the breeder how that trait appears in the dogs they know. A breed standard describes the ideal, not a guarantee about a particular puppy’s behavior.

The standard describes a medium-sized dog, slightly longer than tall, with a wavy to slightly curly body coat and short, straight coat on the face and forelegs. Its adult height ranges are 15½–19 inches for dogs and 14½–18 inches for bitches. These are standard measurements, not a prediction of an individual puppy’s adult size. Where to find Mudi breeders

Start with the breed club

Contact the Mudi Club of America breeder referral service and ask about its current list and upcoming litters. Treat a referral as a starting point for finding people to talk to, not an endorsement of every breeder or litter. You still need to evaluate the breeder, the dogs, and the paperwork yourself.

Availability changes, and a referral list does not establish that a particular breeder has puppies now. Be prepared to ask questions and wait for a litter that suits your circumstances rather than rushing into a purchase.

How to assess a breeder and litter

Meet the breeder and see the dogs

Arrange to visit the breeder’s home or kennel. When possible, meet at least one parent, and observe whether the dogs and puppies appear clean, cared for, and comfortable in their surroundings and with the breeder. Ask about the parents’ health and temperaments and how the puppies are being raised. The American Kennel Club recommends visiting and seeing a parent when possible as part of evaluating a breeder. (AKC: Responsible Breeders)

Ask specific questions about the pairing

  • Why did the breeder choose this sire and dam?
  • What health concerns have occurred in their lines, and what tests were performed on each parent?
  • Can the breeder show verifiable results and explain what those results mean for this pairing?
  • How are puppies raised and assessed, and how does the breeder match them with homes?
  • What support is available after the puppy goes home?

Ask the Mudi Club of America and the breeder for current Mudi-specific health-testing recommendations. The AKC explains that its Breeder of Merit participants certify they perform applicable screenings recommended by the breed’s parent club; that program description is not, by itself, a complete Mudi-specific test list. (AKC: Breed Health Testing Requirements) The club’s FAQ advises careful research into potential health issues, but it should not be read as an exhaustive current panel. (Mudi Club of America FAQ)

Request the actual results rather than relying on a general claim such as “health tested.” Discuss the records with your veterinarian. A generic DNA panel should not be assumed to replace clinical or orthopedic screening appropriate to the dogs and breeding decision.

Review records and the written agreement before paying

Ask what veterinary and health records will accompany the puppy, what food the puppy currently eats, and what care or follow-up the breeder recommends. Read the contract in full before paying. Confirm that it identifies the puppy and parents, lists the records being provided, explains health-related terms, and states what should happen if you can no longer keep the dog. AKC buyer guidance identifies buyer screening, continuing support, and a return-to-breeder clause as features of responsible breeding practices. Thoughtful breeders may ask about your household and experience, and may want to know how you plan to meet a puppy’s needs. Be cautious if a seller will not answer reasonable questions, show available records, discuss the parents or living conditions, or explain a written contract. Any one concern calls for follow-up rather than proving misconduct on its own.

How to choose an individual Mudi puppy

Before discussing a puppy match, describe your household honestly: your daily schedule, dog experience, other pets, children, training interests, and appetite for living with an alert working breed. Ask the breeder how they evaluate the puppies over time and what they have observed about each one’s activity, sociability, and response to novelty.

Observe the litter in a calm setting, but do not treat a single encounter as a reliable temperament test. A puppy’s momentary behavior may not show how it acts across different situations. Give more weight to the breeder’s repeated observations and the reasoning behind a proposed match. The Mudi Club of America notes that individual dogs vary in temperament and recommends careful research before purchase. (Mudi Club of America FAQ)

There is no universal “best puppy” test or fixed temperament score established by these sources. Color, first-come selection, or a puppy’s behavior during one short visit cannot reliably predict the adult dog you will get. Ask the breeder to explain why a particular puppy may suit your home, and consider whether that match aligns with the kind of activity, training, and household life you can offer.

Practical checklist before committing

  1. Contact the Mudi Club of America breeder referral service and ask about the current list and upcoming litters.
  2. Visit the breeder’s home or kennel, meet at least one parent if possible, and observe the dogs’ condition and surroundings.
  3. Ask why the parents were paired, what health tests were done, and for verifiable results you can discuss with your veterinarian.
  4. Talk through how puppies are raised and assessed, how the breeder makes matches, and what support continues after placement.
  5. Review the puppy’s records and the full written contract—including the return-to-breeder terms—before paying.
  6. Choose based on a considered match between the puppy’s observed traits and your home, not a single encounter or appearance.

This guide draws on US breed-club and AKC sources. Referral systems, local laws, and import rules differ by country, so check the requirements where you live.
