For a small, loose tangle in a long-haired Dachshund’s coat, gently tease the hairs apart with your fingers, then use a wide-tooth comb or slicker brush in short strokes, working from the ends toward the skin. Stop if the knot resists or your dog shows discomfort. Tight, large, painful, skin-adjacent, or sensitive-area mats should be handled by a professional groomer or veterinarian. Never cut a mat out with household scissors.
Check whether the mat is safe to handle at home
Home grooming is appropriate only when the tangle is small, loose, and away from sensitive areas, and your dog is calm enough to tolerate gentle handling. General canine grooming guidance does not establish a special dematting protocol for long-haired Dachshunds, so let the mat’s size, location, and your dog’s comfort guide your decision.
- Try gentle home care: a small, loose knot that is not painful and does not sit close to the skin.
- Arrange professional help: a tight, extensive, painful, stubborn, or skin-adjacent mat, or one near the eyes, ears, genitals, or anus. A groomer can advise whether veterinary care is needed.
- Contact a veterinarian: if the skin is red, swollen, moist, broken, or has an odor or discharge, or if matting is extensive. Severe cases may require sedation or anesthesia for safe removal.
Mats can tug on the skin and trap moisture and debris, leading to irritation or infection. Advanced matting can cause serious wounds and impair circulation. [ASPCA] [PetMD]
How to loosen a small, loose tangle
- Settle your dog and inspect the tangle. Make sure it is small, loose, and not painful. Do not proceed if it is tight against the skin, extensive, or in a sensitive area.
- Separate the hairs with your fingers. Gently tease apart the outer hairs; do not yank or pull the mat against the skin.
- Use a comb or brush only if the knot stays loose. Try a wide-tooth comb or slicker brush with short, gentle strokes, starting at the tips and gradually working toward the skin. Take breaks so your dog can relax. A dog-formulated detangler may help with a small knot; follow its label.
- Stop at the first sign of trouble. If your dog cries, snaps, resists handling, or the knot does not loosen with gentle effort, stop and contact a groomer or veterinarian. Do not switch to scissors.
- Check the skin when the tangle is gone. Contact a veterinarian if you find redness, raw or broken skin, swelling, moisture, odor, or discharge.
AKC guidance advises against cutting mats out of a dog’s coat yourself, while ASPCA veterinarian Dr. Julie Horton warns never to cut mats with scissors: a sudden movement can cause a severe laceration or puncture. [AKC] [ASPCA]
Choose help based on the mat and the skin
A professional groomer or veterinarian is the safer choice when a mat will not release easily, covers a significant area, causes distress, or is close to delicate skin. A veterinarian should assess extensive matting or suspected skin damage; the appropriate removal method depends on the dog’s condition, and severe cases may need sedation or anesthesia. Do not attempt to cut out a difficult mat at home. [PetMD]
Prevent mats with regular checks and brushing
Long hair that mats frequently may need daily attention. ASPCA guidance recommends a routine that gently teases tangles with a slicker brush, followed by brushing with a bristle brush. AKC notes that tools should suit the coat and describes slicker brushes as useful for mats and dead hair. These are general dog-care recommendations, not a Dachshund-specific prescription; ask your groomer or veterinarian to recommend a tool and schedule for your dog. [ASPCA] [AKC]
Check friction-prone areas regularly, especially behind the ears, under the legs and around the armpits, around collars or harnesses, between the toes, and near the tail and hindquarters. Addressing a loose tangle early is easier than trying to work through a tight mat.
