Before you leave, give your cat a short play session, offer part of its usual food in a puzzle feeder, and set out familiar, safe ways to hide, rest, scratch, climb, and watch the world. These activities can make time alone more engaging, but they do not replace a person checking on a cat during a long absence or when the cat has particular care needs.
Set up a simple routine before you leave
- Play together. Use an interactive toy such as a wand while you are home. Put it away before leaving; string and elastic toys can catch around a cat’s neck or leg.
- Offer part of the normal food allowance. Put some of the cat’s usual food in a puzzle feeder rather than adding extra treats. Try the feeder while you are present first, so you can check that your cat can use it safely.
- Leave familiar solo activities. Choose toys your cat has already used safely and inspect them for loose parts, swallowing risks, or places where paws or claws could become trapped.
- Make useful spaces accessible. Leave comfortable hiding and resting places, a scratching surface, and a stable perch or climbing area. A window view can add interest if the window and surrounding area are secure.
Food puzzles can make feeding more engaging while encouraging mental and physical activity. Cats Protection and the ASPCA recommend food puzzles as enrichment; a purpose-built cat puzzle feeder is one option. Introduce it before relying on it while you are out, and use the cat’s usual food allowance. A cardboard box or paper puzzle can be a low-cost alternative, but inspect it and supervise first: the ASPCA advises removing DIY enrichment if a cat tries to eat it.
Choose toys for unsupervised use carefully
For time alone, favor simple, familiar toys that cannot readily be swallowed or tangled. Cats Protection suggests options such as ping-pong balls and catnip toys, and cautions against string hazards. International Cat Care warns that string or elastic attached to toys can catch around a kitten’s neck or leg and says kittens should not be left alone with those toys. Cats Protection’s 2025 guidance also warns against leaving out toys that could be eaten or cause entanglement.
- Put away wand toys, loose string, elastic, and anything your cat has tried to chew or swallow.
- Inspect toys for damage or loose pieces before leaving them out.
- Rotate a few safe toys or activities to add novelty, rather than expecting one toy to occupy every cat for a predictable length of time.
- Treat household DIY objects as supervised experiments, not automatically safe unattended toys. For example, the ASPCA suggests cardboard boxes, packing paper, and paper shopping bags with the handles removed, but says to supervise DIY enrichment and remove it if the cat tries to ingest it.
Make the room engaging, not just busy
Good enrichment gives a cat opportunities to express normal behaviors. Arrange the space so your cat can explore, scratch, climb, hide, sleep, and observe from a safe elevated spot. Keep resting and hiding places comfortable and accessible rather than relying only on active toys.

If you provide a window view, make sure the window is secure and that nearby furniture or perches are stable. Help your cat adjust to time alone
If your cat is unused to being alone, introduce changes gradually where possible. Cats Protection advises building up time away and using play before departure, enrichment feeding, scratching and climbing options, comfortable places to hide and sleep, safe toys, and window access. You can also offer play when you return, keeping the routine predictable.

Vocalizing or acting differently while you are out does not, by itself, establish separation anxiety. Changes can have more than one cause, including disrupted routines. If behavior changes persist, seem severe, or occur alongside other changes, contact your veterinarian; a medical issue can affect behavior. A veterinarian can advise whether a qualified behavior professional is also appropriate.

Cats Protection advises arranging a cat sitter, friend, family member, neighbor, or cattery if you will be away for longer than 12 hours, or for less time if your cat has specific needs. This is practical guidance rather than a universal medical cutoff: age, health, medication, temperament, and other individual circumstances can mean your cat needs care sooner. Enrichment helps make a suitable period alone more interesting; it is not a substitute for care when you will be away too long.
