How to Introduce a New Cat to a Resident Cat That Seems Lonely

Keep a new cat separate at first, introduce scents, and progress to supervised contact only when both cats are comfortable. A companion is not a guaranteed fix for a cat that seems lonely.

To introduce a new cat to a resident cat that seems lonely, keep them apart at first, let them get used to each other’s scent, then move to brief, supervised visual contact and shared time only as both cats remain comfortable. A cat seeming lonely does not prove it wants a feline companion; watch its individual reactions rather than expecting a new cat to fix the problem. A successful introduction may mean peaceful coexistence, not friendship.

Prepare a separate room for the new cat

Before bringing the cats together, set up a quiet room with a door that closes securely. Give the newcomer its own food, water, litter box, resting spots, scratching surface, and hiding place. Let the cat settle there without an immediate face-to-face meeting, and keep giving your resident cat its usual attention and routine.

The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine advises that “introducing cats who are strangers to each other should be done in a gradual fashion.” Start with separation, then let the cats’ behavior guide each next step. UC Davis: Introducing Your New Cat to Your Other Household Cats

Exchange scents before they meet

Once both cats have had time to settle, offer each a soft item carrying the other cat’s scent, such as bedding. Leave the item where the cat can approach or ignore it; do not push it toward the cat or hold the cat near it. If either cat seems unsettled, remove the item or increase the distance and try again later.

Pair the other cat’s presence with food

Offer meals or treats on opposite sides of the closed door. Start far enough away that both cats can eat calmly; move the dishes closer only as they become comfortable. Keep sessions brief and positive. If a cat will not eat or appears distressed, increase the distance or return to scent-only introductions.

The goal is not to make the cats approach each other. It is to let them notice the other cat’s presence while remaining relaxed. Seattle Humane and Wisconsin Humane Society both recommend using the cats’ comfort to determine whether to progress. Allow brief visual contact through a secure barrier

When both cats are comfortable with scent and closed-door sessions, try a short, supervised look at each other through a secure barrier. A pet gate can be one option, but it is not essential. Choose a barrier that fits the opening and is secure for these particular cats, including against climbing or pushing; stay present so you can close off access safely.

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley describes barrier-based visual contact as a step to use when the cats are ready, not a way to force them to interact. Humane Society of Boulder Valley: Introducing a New Cat to Your Resident Cat

Try shared space only when barrier sessions are calm

After calm barrier sessions, you can try a short, supervised period in the same room. Keep escape routes and places to retreat open. Do not hold either cat in place, carry them toward each other, or force a greeting. End the session and separate them if either cat becomes distressed; return to an earlier step before trying again.

Keep essential resources separate and easy to reach

Continue to provide each cat with access to food, water, litter, resting places, scratching surfaces, and hiding places without having to compete for them. Distribute key resources around the home, and use visual barriers between them where practical. The 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines identify plentiful, well-distributed resources and visual barriers as important parts of managing intercat tension.

Let behavior—not a calendar—set the pace

Introduction timelines vary. Wisconsin Humane Society notes that separation may take days or weeks, while Seattle Humane emphasizes that time ranges are suggestions and that progression should follow both cats’ behavior. Do not treat a particular number of days as a deadline for direct contact.

Hissing or unease is a reason to slow down, not to push ahead. Separate the cats, return to scent exchange or calm closed-door sessions, and try again later. If distress continues or conflict repeats or escalates, speak with a veterinarian or a qualified feline behavior professional for advice suited to your cats.

Does a cat that seems lonely need another cat?

Not necessarily. The fact that a resident cat seems lonely does not establish that it wants another cat, and adding a companion is not a guaranteed remedy. Temperament, history, and each cat’s response to the introduction matter. Treat adoption as a decision about whether your household can meet both cats’ needs, not as a cure for a presumed problem.
