Ask your veterinary team to demonstrate the method, set a testing schedule, and explain how to respond to results or symptoms. Do not change your cat’s insulin dose based on a home reading unless your veterinarian directs you to.
Choose a monitoring method with your veterinarian
The right approach depends on what your veterinary team needs to learn, what your cat will tolerate, and what you can reliably do at home. Home monitoring may involve individual spot checks, a glucose curve collected over time, or a CGM. The veterinarian should decide which information is useful and how it will affect the treatment plan.
| Method | What it provides | What to discuss with the veterinarian |
|---|---|---|
| Glucometer spot check | A blood glucose reading from a small blood sample. | Which meter and strips to use, how to collect the sample, and when to test. |
| Glucose curve | A series of readings over a treatment interval, showing how glucose changes over time. | When to take each reading, what to record, and how the curve will guide care. |
| Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) | Glucose information from a sensor placed on the cat, without a caregiver taking each individual spot sample. | Suitability, sensor placement and attachment, how readings are accessed, the monitoring period, and how the team will interpret the data. |
There is no single best method for every cat. Consider whether your cat tolerates ear sampling or a sensor, whether spot readings or information over time better answer the veterinary question, and whether you can collect and record readings as instructed.
How to take a blood glucose reading
For a glucometer reading, a small blood sample is applied according to the meter’s instructions. International Cat Care describes collecting a sample from the edge of the cat’s ear with a fine needle or lancing device. Ask your veterinary team to demonstrate the technique with your cat before trying it on your own.

- 𝟓-𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 – From blood collection to displaying results in just 5 seconds, significantly reducing pet stress time—especially crucial for anxious cats and dogs. The screen clearly shows glucose levels (e.g., 100 mg/L), time, and date for easy trend tracking. The portable design (with a storage bag) is ideal for home and travel use, meeting emergency monitoring needs.
- 𝐍𝐨 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 - One-touch operation with no coding or training needed. Simple 3-step process: Insert test strip → Collect blood → Get results. - Confirm the equipment. Use the meter recommended by your veterinarian, with test strips compatible with that specific meter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Prepare your cat and supplies as demonstrated. Have the glucometer, compatible strip, and lancet or lancing device ready. Ask the veterinary team how to make the process manageable for your cat.
- Collect the sample as taught. The described technique uses a small sample from the edge of the ear. Do not improvise a sampling method if you have not been shown how to do it safely.
- Apply the sample and record the result. Follow the meter instructions and the veterinarian’s directions about what information to log and when to share it.
International Cat Care’s caregiver guide describes obtaining a small drop of blood from the ear’s edge with a fine needle or lancing device for a glucometer reading.
What to know about CGMs
A CGM uses a sensor placed on the cat to provide glucose information without requiring you to take each reading with a blood sample. The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) and VCA describe FreeStyle Libre as an example that may be considered. Ask your veterinarian whether a CGM is appropriate for your cat, how its sensor should be placed and attached, and how the resulting information will be used. Do not assume that different models or regional versions are interchangeable.

Interpret readings in context
Use the meter your veterinary team recommends
AAFP reports that human glucometers generally read 18–36 mg/dL (1–2 mmol/L) lower than analyzers validated for use in cats and dogs. This is a reported comparison, not a correction factor for an individual result. Use the meter recommended by your veterinary team and ask how to interpret readings from it.
A veterinary meter such as AlphaTRAK is one option named by AAFP; VCA names AlphaTrak 2. Confirm the current model and compatible test strips with your veterinarian before purchasing.

Home readings can add useful information
Stress during travel or a clinic visit can raise a cat’s blood glucose, which may affect a clinic curve. Measurements at home can offer useful context about glucose during the cat’s ordinary routine. They are one part of monitoring, not a reason to interpret a result or change treatment without veterinary guidance.
Know when to seek urgent veterinary help
Low blood glucose can be dangerous. VCA lists weakness, lethargy, shaking, unsteadiness, and convulsions as signs that require immediate veterinary attention. Ask your veterinarian for a cat-specific emergency plan before you begin home monitoring. Clarify which readings or symptoms mean you should call, what immediate steps to take, and where to seek urgent care. Do not adjust insulin based on an isolated result or without veterinary direction.

Set up a practical monitoring plan
Before monitoring at home, ask your veterinary team to agree on:
- Which method to use and what question the monitoring is intended to answer.
- When and how often to test, including the timing of any readings in a glucose curve.
- Which meter, strips, lancets, or sensor are suitable and compatible.
- What details to record and how to share the results with the clinic.
- Which results or symptoms require a call or urgent care, and what to do in that situation.
- How and when the veterinarian will review the information and make treatment decisions.
