Choose a Xoloitzcuintli if you want more size options—including a standard-size dog—or are drawn to a breed described as calm and reserved. Choose a Chinese Crested if you want a toy companion described as affectionate and lively. Both breeds come in hairless and coated varieties, and both need care suited to their skin or coat. These are breed tendencies, not guarantees; meeting individual dogs is essential.

What is the difference between a Xoloitzcuintli and a Chinese Crested?

Decision Xoloitzcuintli Chinese Crested
Size Toy, miniature, and standard sizes. A toy breed.
Coat varieties Hairless and coated; the coated variety has a short, flat coat. Hairless and powderpuff; the powderpuff has a full double coat.
Hairless pattern Mostly bare, with limited short, coarse hair permitted on the head, feet, and tail. Longer hair on the head (crest), tail (plume), and feet (socks).
Published temperament descriptions The official standard describes the typical temperament as calm, tranquil, aloof, and attentive. The breed standard says “gay and alert”; AKC describes the breed as frolicsome and ultra-affectionate.

These descriptions come from breed standards and profiles, not assessments of a particular dog. ( AKC Xoloitzcuintli profile; AKC Chinese Crested profile; Xoloitzcuintli Club of America; American Chinese Crested Club.)

Are Xoloitzcuintlis bigger than Chinese Cresteds?

They can be. A Xolo is available in three sizes, while the Chinese Crested is a toy breed. The American Kennel Club lists these Xolo ranges in its current breed profile, accessed in 2026:

Xolo size Height Weight
Toy 10–14 inches 10–15 pounds
Miniature 14–18 inches 15–30 pounds
Standard 18–23 inches 30–55 pounds

Those are published ranges, not a promise of an individual dog’s adult measurements. Ask the breeder about the puppy’s parents and relatives, and discuss expected growth with your veterinarian. The Crested standard identifies the breed as a toy dog; the cited sources do not provide a directly comparable height-and-weight table for it.

Which hairless dog is right for me?

Choose a Xolo if size flexibility matters

The Xolo’s toy, miniature, and standard sizes give prospective owners more choice in scale. Its breed standard describes a calm, tranquil, aloof, and attentive temperament. The Xoloitzcuintli Club of America says many Xolos are reserved or wary of strangers and bond strongly with their owners; it says they should not be timid or aggressive. Meet adult Xolos from the breeder’s lines to see how those tendencies show up in real dogs.

Choose a Chinese Crested if you want a toy companion

The Chinese Crested is a toy breed, and AKC characterizes it as a frolicsome, ultra-affectionate companion. Its parent-club standard describes it as “gay and alert.” These descriptions can help frame what to ask about, but they do not predict an individual dog’s behavior. Spend time with the puppy and, when possible, its parents or adult relatives.

Aztec Sitting Xoloitzcuintli Whistle Clay Figurine
  • AZTEC DESIGN: Handcrafted clay figurine depicting the iconic Xoloitzcuintli, the ancient hairless dog revered in Aztec culture.
  • FUNCTIONAL WHISTLE: Features a built-in whistle with finger holes, making it both a decorative figurine and a playable instrument.
  • AUTHENTIC CLAY CONSTRUCTION: Crafted from terracotta-style clay with a warm reddish-brown finish and hand-etched surface details.
  • UNIQUE COLLECTIBLE: Each piece showcases hand-shaped features including large ears, etched facial markings, and a seated pose.
  • DISPLAY PIECE: A wonderful addition to any collection of pre-Columbian art, cultural artifacts, or decorative figurines.

What skin and coat care do they need?

Hairless does not mean maintenance-free. The two breeds have distinct hairless patterns, and either breed’s coated variety changes the care routine: a coated Xolo has a short, flat coat, while a powderpuff Crested has a full double coat.

  • Hairless Xolo: AKC says adults need minimal grooming, though young dogs may need special care for adolescent acne. It advises sunscreen with prolonged direct sun exposure.
  • Hairless Chinese Crested: AKC describes sunscreen and skin treatments suited to the dog’s skin type, as well as acne lotions, among possible care measures.
  • Powderpuff Chinese Crested: Its full coat calls for a coat-care routine rather than the bare-skin routine of the hairless variety.

If considering sunscreen for hairless dogs, use a dog-formulated product and ask your veterinarian which product is appropriate for that dog. Sunscreen does not replace shade or other sensible sun management.

Are Xoloitzcuintlis or Chinese Cresteds hypoallergenic?

The cited sources do not establish that either breed is hypoallergenic. The Xoloitzcuintli Club of America says some people with allergies may live comfortably with a Xolo, but that this varies by individual. If you have allergies, spend time with the specific dog before committing and consult your clinician as appropriate; do not rely on a breed label as a guarantee.

What health records should you ask for?

There is no basis here for declaring one breed healthier overall. Ask breeders for documentation and discuss what it means for the specific dog with a veterinarian.

  • For a Chinese Crested: AKC mentions Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease and says there is no DNA test to screen parents for it, though the condition may show on X-rays.

Screening can inform a decision; it does not guarantee a healthy puppy. Ask the breeder:

  • Which health evaluations have the puppy’s parents completed, and can I see the reports?
  • What skin, dental, eye, orthopedic, or other issues have appeared in this line?
  • What care routine do you recommend for this puppy’s skin or coat, and what signs should prompt a veterinary visit?
  • Can I meet the puppy’s parents or other adult relatives and observe their behavior?

How long do Xoloitzcuintlis live?

Published Xolo estimates vary: the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America gives an approximate average lifespan of 14–17 years (the year of the estimate is not stated on its consulted page, accessed in 2026), while AKC lists 13–18 years in its current breed profile (accessed in 2026). These are estimates from different publishers, not a direct comparison with Chinese Cresteds; the cited Chinese Crested profile does not provide a matching lifespan figure.

Use this checklist to make your choice

  • Decide whether you want only a toy-sized dog or want the option of a miniature or standard-size dog.
  • Consider whether you prefer the Xolo’s mostly bare look or the Crested’s crest, plume, and socks; also weigh a powderpuff’s full coat against a coated Xolo’s short, flat coat.
  • Think about the kind of interaction you want, then meet adult dogs from the lines you are considering rather than treating breed descriptions as promises.
  • Be realistic about skin care, sun management, and any coat-care routine you are prepared to maintain.
  • Review health records with the breeder and your veterinarian, and ask questions about the specific family line.
