How to Prepare Your Pet for Air Travel and Reduce Travel Stress

A practical plan for flying with a dog or cat: confirm airline and destination rules, consult a veterinarian, practice with the carrier, and prepare for departure day.

The best way to make air travel less stressful for a dog or cat is to plan around that animal and the exact itinerary: confirm the operating airline’s rules before booking, ask a veterinarian whether the pet is fit to travel, and introduce the required carrier well in advance. Airline and entry rules vary by flight, aircraft, route, and destination, so verify them for every airline and every destination or transit country before travel.

In IATA’s 2025 Global Passenger Survey, reported in 2026, 41% of respondents who have or would consider travelling with a pet cited uncertainty about pet eligibility; 36% were unsure about airline policy and 34% about the overall process. Those are survey findings, not estimates for all travelers. A clear plan can help you resolve the uncertainties that apply to your trip.

What to check with the airline before booking

Contact each operating airline, including every carrier on a connecting itinerary, and ask whether it will accept your pet on the specific flights. A booking site’s general pet information or a carrier labeled “airline approved” does not confirm acceptance for your route.

  • Whether your pet’s species, size, breed, and age are eligible for cabin travel, transport in the hold, or cargo on those flights.
  • Whether the aircraft has usable under-seat space if you want to travel with your pet in the cabin, and the exact carrier dimensions and construction the airline accepts.
  • Whether you need to reserve a place for the pet, how many animals are allowed per flight, and what fees apply.
  • What health records or other documents the airline requires, and how and when you must check in.
  • Whether temperature, season, route, or other restrictions could affect acceptance or transport.

Airlines can impose limits beyond destination-entry rules and may refuse an animal they judge unable to travel safely. Ask about the actual aircraft and itinerary, not just the airline’s general policy. The U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA provide air-travel guidance, while IATA’s traveler guidance also notes that individual airlines may have additional requirements.

How to decide whether your pet is fit to fly

Arrange a veterinary conversation early, before an airline document deadline is close. Ask the veterinarian to consider your individual pet’s health, age, temperament, chronic conditions, heat tolerance, medications, feeding needs, and whether cabin or hold transport is appropriate. The answer is not determined by breed alone.

Short-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs and cats may be more vulnerable to breathing problems and heat stress, particularly under stress or in extreme heat, according to USDA air-travel training. Illness, injury, age, and individual behavior can also affect suitability. Check any airline breed restrictions separately and discuss the specific animal with the veterinarian.

USDA guidance for the cited U.S. requirements says dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old and fully weaned. An airline, destination, or transit country may set a stricter minimum age.

Choose a carrier your airline and aircraft will accept

Get the airline’s precise carrier requirements before buying or borrowing an in-cabin pet carrier. The fit depends on the aircraft and the airline’s rules; a generic “airline approved” label does not guarantee acceptance. IATA says it does not certify, approve, sell, or endorse commercial containers. Its container guidance is not a substitute for the operating airline’s requirements.

For cabin travel, FAA guidance says the container must fit under the seat without obstructing the aisle and must remain properly stowed for taxi, takeoff, and landing. IATA’s general container guidance says an animal should be able to stand, turn around normally, sit fully, and lie in a natural position. Check how your airline applies its requirements to your pet and aircraft; do not assume one soft-sided or hard-sided design will fit every flight.

Build familiarity before travel

  1. Once you know the airline’s requirements, place the actual travel carrier at home with the door open so your pet can explore it at its own pace.
  2. Let the pet spend time near and inside the carrier over weeks or months when practical. Keep the process calm and avoid making the carrier familiar only on departure day.
  3. Follow the veterinarian’s advice if your pet has difficulty with confinement or shows signs of distress. Ask the airline how the carrier must be closed and handled during transport.

How to prepare for departure day

Keep your pet identifiable and make sure contact information is current. Attach any travel information the airline requires. USDA air-travel materials for animals handled as shipments call for owner and receiving-party contact details, routing, health documentation, and feeding and watering information; ask the airline what applies to your transport method.

For dogs, IATA traveler guidance recommends a walk before leaving for the airport and again before check-in. It also recommends sufficient access to water and a light meal around two hours before the animal is tendered to the carrier. These are general recommendations, not a prescription for every animal: follow your veterinarian’s advice for medical or dietary needs and the airline’s instructions for the transport method.

Use the airline’s required check-in timing and reduce avoidable bustle, handling, and waiting where possible. IATA’s passenger guidance says, “Travelling has an unsettling effect on animals and they must be disturbed as little as possible.”

Should you sedate a pet for a flight?

Do not use a sedative or tranquilizer as a routine way to prevent travel anxiety or destructive behavior. IATA advises against routine sedation in transit because medication can reduce an animal’s ability to respond to transport stress, and an airline may refuse a sedated animal.

International trips need destination-specific preparation

Check official entry requirements for the destination and every transit country as soon as the itinerary is being planned. Depending on the country, the process may involve a microchip, vaccinations, tests, permits, veterinary certificates, official endorsement, deadlines, and original paperwork. Do not assume that one health certificate or checklist applies everywhere.

For travel departing the United States, USDA APHIS says each country may set its own requirements. If USDA endorsement is required, the owner and USDA-accredited veterinarian must follow the applicable process. Incomplete paperwork can delay endorsement, and some destinations require original endorsed documents. Confirm which documents are required, the validity window for the destination, and the time needed for each step with official authorities and the veterinarian.

Cabin, hold, cargo, or a different itinerary?

There is no universally best transport option for every pet. Work through the available choices with the airline and veterinarian, considering your pet’s health and size, route and weather restrictions, handling process, and the carrier requirements for the specific service.

Choice What to weigh
Cabin Whether the airline accepts the pet on that flight, the aircraft’s under-seat space, the carrier fit, and whether the pet’s health and temperament suit travel in the cabin.
Hold or cargo Whether the airline offers the service for that pet and route, applicable temperature restrictions, the required carrier and check-in process, and the veterinarian’s assessment of the animal.
Nonstop itinerary The route’s available services and how it compares with alternatives for the pet’s needs.
Connecting itinerary Additional handling points, timing, transit-country rules, and—where cargo is involved—whether facilities will be open when the animal is due for collection. IATA advises checking cargo-facility hours where relevant.

If the animal’s health, airline restrictions, or destination requirements make the available itinerary unsuitable, discuss alternatives with the veterinarian and airline before committing to travel.
