How to Adopt a Yorkie Shih Tzu Mix: Questions to Ask and What to Expect

A Shorkie’s mix label cannot predict its needs. Ask about the individual dog’s records, behavior across settings, grooming, and daily routine before adopting.

To adopt a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix, evaluate the individual dog—not assumptions based on its mix label. Ask the shelter or rescue about the dog’s medical history, behavior in different settings, daily routine, and comfort with your household. Then decide whether you can meet its grooming, companionship, training, and veterinary needs over the long term.

How do I adopt a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix?

Shorkie, Shorkie Tzu, and Yorkie Tzu are common names for a Shih Tzu–Yorkshire Terrier cross. The American Kennel Club does not recognize the mix, and there is no breed standard for it, according to PetMD’s Shorkie profile. That means the name alone cannot reliably tell you a particular dog’s adult size, coat, temperament, health, or needs.

Start by asking a shelter or rescue what it knows about the dog and how it reached those conclusions. If a detail is unknown, treat it as unknown rather than filling in the gap with a breed-based guess. Meet the dog, discuss the observations and records available, and consider whether its actual needs fit your home and schedule.

Compare individual dogs on practical needs

If you are considering more than one dog, compare them using the same questions. This is a way to organize your decision, not a formal score or behavior test.

What questions should I ask before adopting a Shorkie?

Ask for specific examples. “How is the dog with people?” is less useful than asking what staff or a foster caregiver has seen when the dog meets familiar and unfamiliar people, is handled, or encounters another dog on a walk. Ask whether an answer reflects repeated observations, one incident, or a single assessment.

History and health

  • What is known about the dog’s age, background, and reason for entering care?
  • What veterinary examination has been done? May I review the available medical records, vaccination information, medication instructions, and recommended follow-up?
  • Have staff noticed signs of pain, eye problems, difficulty breathing, dental issues, or mobility problems? What has been checked, and what has not been evaluated?
  • Is there a veterinarian or clinic familiar with the dog who can answer follow-up questions?

These are due-diligence questions, not a claim that every organization provides the same records or adoption packet. Bring any records you receive to the dog’s veterinarian and ask what care or further evaluation is appropriate.

Behavior and daily routine

  • What have staff, volunteers, or a foster caregiver observed in different settings?
  • How does the dog approach familiar and unfamiliar people? How does it respond to handling, grooming, being picked up, and veterinary-style handling?
  • What have you observed on walks: comfort with a leash, reactions to other dogs or passersby, and recovery after surprises?
  • What is known about house-training, barking, being left alone, sleep, food, and play?
  • Has the dog spent time in a foster home? What seemed different outside the shelter?
  • Which cues does the dog know, and what rewards or training approach work well?
  • Which observations are repeated, and which come from one test or one incident?

Behavior in a shelter or during one meeting is only part of the picture. The ASPCA recommends gathering information from multiple sources, such as previous owners, daily-care staff, walks, playgroups, socialization sessions, and foster stays. It also cautions that behavior assessments have not proved highly accurate or precise at predicting aggression after adoption. As the ASPCA puts it, “Thus, any single source of information should be considered a piece of the puzzle. The more pieces you have, the more complete the puzzle.” See its Position Statement on Shelter Dog Behavior Assessments.

What should I expect from a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix?

Expect variation, not a predictable blend of two parent breeds. PetMD reports that Shorkies have no breed standard. Parent-breed descriptions may help you think of questions, but the dog’s observed behavior and care needs are more relevant than a stereotype. Shih Tzus are companion dogs; the AKC describes Yorkshire Terriers as energetic and in need of mental stimulation. Ask what suits the particular dog in front of you.

For context, PetMD’s 2024 breed information gives life-expectancy ranges of 10–18 years for Shih Tzus and 11–15 years for Yorkshire Terriers. Those are parent-breed ranges, not a measured or guaranteed lifespan for a Shorkie. You can use them as a reminder to plan for a long-term commitment, but they do not predict how long an individual mixed-breed dog will live.

Health questions are not diagnoses

Small size and parent-breed information can suggest topics to raise with a veterinarian, but neither establishes that a particular Shorkie has a condition. PetMD notes patellar luxation and periodontal disease among concerns more common in small breeds such as the two parents. Shih Tzu guidance also discusses eye concerns and limited heat tolerance associated with the breed’s short face and heavy coat. Ask what is known about the individual dog, and leave diagnosis to a veterinarian.

How much grooming does a Shorkie need?

PetMD recommends daily brushing and regular bathing for Shorkies, with attention to hair around the eyes. It notes that the coat can mat; tangles and mats can lead to coat and skin problems. The American Shih Tzu Club also advises frequent brushing to prevent tangling and matting. A daily grooming brush can help with the routine, but the appropriate tool depends on the individual dog’s coat.

Ask the rescue how the dog responds to brushing, bathing, and being handled around the face and feet. If the dog is uncomfortable with grooming, ask what staff have tried and whether a gradual, reward-based approach has helped. Include grooming time and recurring professional-care costs, if needed, in your decision.

Will a Shorkie fit my household?

Consider the dog’s need for company, activity, training, and supervision alongside your actual routine. AKC guidance describes Shih Tzus as needing short daily walks and indoor play, while Yorkshire Terriers benefit from walks and mental stimulation. Those are parent-breed pointers, not a prescription for every mix; age, health, training, and the dog’s own behavior all matter. Ask the rescue what routine the dog currently handles well and use praise-based, positive-reinforcement training.

A small dog is not automatically a good fit for every home. PetMD cautions that young children or larger pets may accidentally injure a very small dog. Ask what is known about the dog’s experience with children and other animals, and make careful, supervised introductions. Do not leave children and a newly adopted dog together without appropriate adult supervision.

What should I budget and prepare for?

Plan for more than the adoption-day expense. The Humane Society of York County advises adopters to account for food, grooming, supplies, veterinary care, training, and emergency costs. It also notes that the first year takes extra time as household routines are established. Its historical dollar examples should not be treated as current prices; ask local veterinary clinics, groomers, trainers, and suppliers for estimates that reflect your area.

Before committing, consider whether your household can provide ongoing care and adapt while the dog settles in. A useful preparation list includes:
