To keep red mites out without killing them, first work out whether they are clover mites coming from vegetation or bird mites coming from a nest. For clover mites, gently vacuum or wipe up indoor strays, then seal gaps around windows and doors. If bird mites are possible, remove them from indoors with a vacuum or moist cloth and address the nest source carefully—never disturb an occupied nest without checking local wildlife rules.
Why identifying the mite matters
“Red mite” is a description, not a reliable species identification. Clover mites are tiny, reddish-brown plant feeders often associated with lawns and other vegetation. Bird mites are parasites associated with birds and their nests, and may enter a home from a nest on or in a building. The right prevention depends on which source is involved.
Clover mites’ unusually long front pair of legs can look like antennae. But mites are difficult to identify by sight, especially when very small. If you cannot confidently distinguish them, consult an extension service or pest-identification specialist. See the University of Maryland Extension’s guide to identifying common household pests.
Remove indoor mites without crushing them
Use a vacuum, ideally with a crevice attachment, or pick mites up with a moist cloth. Avoid crushing clover mites: they can leave red stains on surfaces. The University of Minnesota Extension says vacuuming physically removes bird mites but does not kill them.

After collecting them, empty the vacuum contents into a sealed bag and dispose of it outside, or rinse the cloth. This helps keep collected mites from remaining indoors.
If they are clover mites, block their entry
Clover mites are associated with vegetation and can enter through openings around windows, doors, and vents. Once indoor strays are removed, check these areas and close routes into the house.

- Inspect window and door frames, looking for cracks and gaps.
- Caulk cracks and fit weather stripping where needed to close openings.
- Check vents and other exterior openings for gaps that may need sealing.
For recurring clover mite entry, University of Minnesota Extension describes a clean, bare-soil strip about 18 to 24 inches wide as a possible exterior deterrent. Keep plants from bridging the strip; landscape rock alone is not enough. This is a landscape option, not a necessary measure for every home. Read the extension’s clover mite guidance.

Bird mites may come from nests on or inside a building and can move indoors through exterior openings or from attic and wall spaces. Removing mites from a room will not address a nest that continues to supply them, so the source needs attention.

Treat nest removal as a wildlife matter, not just a pest-control task. Do not disturb a nest containing eggs or young protected songbirds. Rules depend on the bird species and location; check local requirements and seek qualified help if you are unsure whether a nest can be removed.
