What to Do When a Rescue Dog Has Separation Anxiety

A practical plan for possible separation anxiety in a rescue dog: observe the signs, rule out medical causes, prevent overwhelming absences, and train in calm, gradual steps.

If your rescue dog panics when left alone, start by recording what happens and arranging a veterinary check—not by assuming the dog is being stubborn. Then prevent absences that overwhelm the dog where possible and build alone time in tiny steps that end before distress begins. Adoption or a change of home can coincide with separation-related problems, but rescue status alone does not establish the cause.

How to recognize possible separation anxiety

Signs often appear around departures or while the dog is alone. They can include barking or howling, destructive behavior—especially attempts to escape—and urinating or defecating indoors. Some dogs also pant, pace, tremble, drool, or refuse food. Note when each sign begins and whether it happens only when the dog is left.

These behaviors do not prove separation anxiety. House soiling, in particular, can have a medical cause, so arrange a veterinary assessment rather than treating a new accident as a training problem. The ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance lists urinary and other health conditions among possible explanations for urinary incontinence.

What to do first

Observe and share useful details

If it is safe to do so, record a typical brief absence. A video can show your veterinarian how quickly the behavior starts and what the dog does. Note departure cues, whether the dog can eat, which doors or barriers are involved, and whether the dog settles when another person remains with them. Stop the recording or return if the dog is at risk of injury; observation should not mean deliberately pushing the dog into panic.

Book a veterinary evaluation

Discuss the recording and any new toileting, appetite, or behavior changes with your veterinarian. The assessment can help distinguish a separation-related problem from medical conditions or other behavioral explanations, and guide whether a behavior referral is appropriate.

Manage absences while the dog learns

Repeatedly leaving a dog alone longer than they can currently tolerate can make treatment harder. During retraining, try to cover unavoidable absences with a trusted friend or family member, a pet sitter, daycare, or another suitable caregiver. Choose an arrangement the individual dog can handle; this is a way to reduce overwhelming alone time, not a substitute for treatment.

Keep practice absences separate from necessary long absences. The ASPCA recommends that, during treatment, the dog not be left alone except for planned desensitization sessions. In practice, the aim is to avoid testing the dog’s limits while you build tolerance gradually.

Teach alone time in small, calm steps

  1. Find a starting point the dog can manage. Begin with an absence shorter than the time it takes for distress to appear. For some dogs, that may mean stepping outside and coming straight back in.
  2. Return before distress begins. Watch for early signs such as panting, salivation, pacing, trembling, yawning, or frantic behavior. Keep sessions short enough that the dog stays relaxed.
  3. Increase duration gradually. Add time only while the dog remains calm. Progress may be slow and uneven; the dog’s response should set the pace, not a fixed schedule.
  4. Make the next attempt easier if stress appears. Shorten the absence or return to an easier step. Do not wait for the dog to “get over it” while distressed.

ASPCA describes gradual desensitization as a process that can take many weeks for moderate to severe cases. If even brief departures trigger distress, or you are unsure how to set the next step, ask your veterinarian about experienced behavior support. Exposure that is too intense can worsen the problem.

Use food only if the dog can eat

For a dog with mild signs who is willing to eat while alone, a food-stuffed puzzle toy may help create a positive association with a short absence. The ASPCA gives a Kong-style toy as an example. It is optional enrichment, not a cure; many highly anxious dogs will not eat when left, and food alone is not an adequate plan for moderate or severe distress.

Choose confinement based on the dog’s response

A crate is suitable for some dogs that already treat it as a comfortable resting place. For others, confinement adds fear or creates an escape hazard. Observe your dog in the crate when someone is home, as well as during any planned practice absence. Heavy panting, excessive salivation, frantic escape attempts, or persistent barking or howling are signs to stop using that setup and ask your veterinarian about a safer room or gated area.

The decision is not whether crates are universally good or bad; it is whether this dog remains safe and relaxed in this particular space.

When to seek behavior and medication support

Contact your veterinarian promptly if the dog may injure themselves, cannot tolerate even very short practice absences, or shows severe distress. Ask whether referral to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or another appropriately qualified behavior professional is appropriate. A professional can help shape a gradual plan around the dog’s actual responses.

Medication may be part of care for some dogs, alongside behavior modification and environmental changes. It requires veterinary assessment and monitoring; do not use human medicines, other pets’ medicines, or supplements without veterinary guidance. VCA discusses fluoxetine and clomipramine as medications tested and FDA-approved for dogs in its United States context, but that does not establish approval, availability, suitability, or dosing for every dog or country. The ASPCA’s position statement on behavioral medication in shelter animals emphasizes combining medication with behavior modification and environmental or enrichment interventions for longer-term change.

Avoid punishment

Do not scold or punish the dog for barking, destruction, or accidents linked to distress. Anxiety is not spite or disobedience, and punishment may make the problem worse. Focus on safety, veterinary assessment, and practice at a level the dog can handle.
