Introduce a rescue dog to children and visitors slowly, with the dog free to keep its distance or retreat. Set up a child-free safe space, supervise every child–dog interaction, and use a secure barrier or separate room to manage visitors. If the dog seems uncomfortable, stop the greeting and give it space rather than asking it to tolerate contact.

Prepare your home before introductions

A newly adopted dog may need time and quiet to settle. Give the dog a resting place that children and visitors cannot enter, such as a separate room or a protected area behind a secure gate. The dog must be able to move away from people; do not corner it or make it interact.

Keep visitors to a minimum while the dog adjusts. Warrington Animal Welfare suggests doing so for the first few days, but that is general settling advice, not a fixed timetable for every dog. Let the individual dog’s comfort guide when to begin introductions. See Warrington Animal Welfare’s settling-in guidance.

Introduce the dog to children

Teach the rules first

Before the dog arrives, explain that children should use quiet voices and calm movements. They must not chase, hug, kiss, grab, crowd, wake, or take things from the dog. Leave the dog alone when it is eating, sleeping, chewing, playing with a valued item, or resting in its safe area. These precautions align with RSPCA Australia’s guidance on introducing dogs to children, updated April 16, 2025.

Keep first meetings short and calm

  1. Have the child sit quietly while an adult directly supervises both child and dog.
  2. Give the dog room to approach voluntarily. Do not carry or lead it over to the child or insist on a greeting.
  3. If the dog stays relaxed and the child remains calm, gentle petting on the shoulder or chest may be appropriate. Avoid reaching over the dog’s head or tail.
  4. End the session if the child becomes overexcited or the dog seems uncomfortable. Repeat brief, positive sessions over time rather than prolonging the first meeting. Wisconsin Humane Society also recommends allowing the dog to set the pace in its guidance on introducing dogs to new people, last updated March 23, 2026.

Never leave a child alone with the dog. If you cannot give direct supervision, separate them with a secure physical barrier. A gate can help manage access, but it does not replace an adult’s attention during an interaction.

Manage visitors before they arrive

Set up separation and give guests instructions

Before guests enter, place the dog behind a tall, secure barrier. Have a separate room or another safe area ready in case the dog cannot settle. Ask visitors to contact you before coming in so you can put the dog safely in place.

Tell guests to ignore the dog at first: they should not approach, stare at, speak to, reach over, or try to engage with it. Wisconsin Humane Society explains this approach in its barrier-based introduction guidance, last updated January 27, 2026.

Let the dog decide whether to approach

If the dog stays relaxed and you choose to progress, ask the visitor to move slowly and quietly. Allow the dog to approach or move away as it chooses. Keep the barrier in place unless the dog’s behavior supports a change, and stop or return to separation if the dog shows discomfort.

If the dog remains tense, barks, growls, retreats, or will not take food behind the barrier, do not remove the barrier to push ahead with the greeting. Move the dog to its separate safe area or pause the visit. If this response recurs or concerns you, seek behavior support before trying again.

Recognize discomfort and respond safely

Possible signs of discomfort include avoiding eye contact, yawning, lip licking, or holding the tail low, according to RSPCA Australia. Retreating, tense body language, barking, growling, or refusing food during a visitor introduction are also reasons to stop and create distance in Wisconsin Humane Society’s guidance. No one signal gives a complete picture: consider the dog’s overall behavior, and give it space when uncertain.

When to seek professional help

Stop introductions and consult a veterinarian with behavior expertise or a suitably qualified dog behavior professional if the dog repeatedly shows fear, stress, or aggression around children or visitors. The AVMA also advises consulting a veterinarian when fear or aggression seems excessive or unprovoked. Until you have guidance, use separation rather than testing whether the dog will tolerate another greeting.
