Stop touching the dog and give them room to move away. Flinching, freezing, stiffening, or growling means the dog is uncomfortable or feels threatened; it does not tell you why. Don’t punish the warning or try another touch to see what happens. If the reaction is new, focused on one body area, worsening, or paired with other changes, arrange a veterinary appointment to check for pain or illness.

What to do in the moment

  1. Stop your hand. Don’t continue petting, reach again, or try to guide the dog by the collar.
  2. Make space. Turn slightly sideways, avoid looming or reaching over the dog, and let them leave. Keep children and visitors from approaching or petting.
  3. Stay calm and don’t punish. A growl is a warning, not an invitation to scold or confront the dog. Punishment or forced handling can make an already uncomfortable interaction more threatening. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s discussion of body handling describes how aversive handling can evoke defensive behavior.
  4. Don’t test the reaction. Wait for a safer plan rather than repeating the touch, cornering the dog, or holding them still.

Freezing or going quiet does not necessarily mean the dog accepts contact. Stiffness, turning or leaning away, shrinking back, a hard stare, and growling can signal discomfort or possible escalation. See the AVSAB guide to canine facial expressions and body postures.

Could touch sensitivity mean pain?

Yes. Pain is one possible cause, especially if the response is new, localized to a particular area, getting worse, or accompanied by changes in movement or behavior. Cornell lists negative reactions to touch and uncharacteristic growling or snapping among possible pain signs and advises veterinary evaluation: Recognizing pain in dogs.

Make a veterinary appointment for unexplained or changing sensitivity. Before the visit, write down what happened: the body area touched, the kind of touch, the setting, when the reaction began, and any accompanying changes. Cornell notes that written observations, photos, or video can help the veterinarian assess possible pain. Don’t provoke a reaction to obtain a recording.

How to help the dog become more comfortable with touch

Work at a level the dog can handle, with the option to opt out. The goal is not to make the dog endure contact, but to create predictable, positive experiences and stop before discomfort appears.

  1. Begin with an easy, voluntary step. For example, let the dog approach a still hand or offer a very brief touch in an area they already seem comfortable with. Don’t reach toward a dog who is moving away.
  2. Pair the step with something the dog values. Use a suitable reward immediately after calm, voluntary participation.
  3. Keep each attempt brief. Stop while the dog remains comfortable. If they turn away, stiffen, freeze, shrink back, or growl, end the attempt and give space.
  4. Make the next attempt easier if needed. Reduce the intensity, duration, or closeness, or return to a step the dog can manage. Increase difficulty gradually rather than pushing through a refusal.

Cornell advises never forcing a dog to confront fears head-on and recommends smaller, slower steps when a dog walks away. Its guidance on fearful dogs supports gradual exposure below the level that triggers fear, paired with something the dog values. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior problems and rejects aversive methods; see its position statements and handouts.

When to get professional help

Ask your veterinarian for guidance if the reaction persists, is severe, involves snapping or biting, or makes necessary care difficult. A veterinary referral to a veterinary behaviorist or a qualified trainer who uses humane, reward-based methods can help build a safe handling plan. Professional support is especially important when children are in the home or the dog has already made contact with teeth.

If bite risk is a concern, manage distance and discuss safety with the veterinary team. A properly selected basket muzzle may be one part of a plan when introduced positively; it is not a way to force touch or a treatment for fear. Cornell explains muzzle choices. For veterinary visits, Cornell also advises allowing the dog to decline handling and walk away when possible: How to make veterinary visits less stressful for dogs.
