The most dependable way to help a newly adopted dog settle is to provide a quiet home base, a predictable routine, and patient, reward-based interaction. A food-stuffed puzzle toy may offer useful enrichment, but it is not a cure for severe anxiety. Pheromone products have weak overall evidence, and supplements or medication should not be given without veterinary guidance.

What can I do to help my newly adopted dog settle in?

Moving to a new home and changing guardians or routines can be stressful. An unsettled dog does not automatically have an anxiety disorder: observe what your dog does, when it happens, and whether it improves with a calmer environment. There is no established adoption-specific adjustment timeline, so avoid treating a fixed rule or number of days as a guarantee.

Set up one quiet home base

Choose a low-traffic area where your dog can rest, with water, a comfortable bed, and familiar resources when available. Let the dog explore and approach people at its own pace. Cornell recommends predictable daily activities, while ASPCA moving guidance suggests initially giving a pet one room or home base in which to adjust. Cornell’s separation-anxiety guidance and ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance offer practical background.

Make the day predictable

Keep meals, walks, rest, play, and training reasonably consistent. Limit a rush of visitors and unfamiliar experiences while the dog is learning the household. Use calm, reward-based interaction; yelling, jerking the leash, or punishment can add fear rather than help the dog feel secure.

Choose confinement based on the dog’s response

A crate is not automatically soothing. Some dogs use one as a resting place, while others become more distressed when confined. Persistent howling, heavy panting, or frantic attempts to escape are signs to stop relying on that setup and consider a gated room or another safe area instead. Do not leave a dog in a confinement arrangement that is provoking panic.

Which calming aids may help?

Option What it may help with Evidence and limits Practical decision
Quiet home base and routine General adjustment and predictability Recommended practical supports; they do not establish that a dog has or does not have a medical or behavioral condition. Start here and adjust to the individual dog’s response.
Food-stuffed puzzle toy Enrichment through licking and chewing; may help some mild separation cases Not a cure. Highly anxious dogs may refuse food when alone; moderate or severe separation anxiety needs a more involved plan. Offer it while supervised first and use a toy appropriate for the dog. A useful product search phrase is stuffable dog food puzzle toy; no particular model is established as best.
Dog-appeasing pheromone product Possible adjunct for stress Weak overall evidence; benefit remains undetermined, with no demonstrated superior format. Optional, not a substitute for behavior support or veterinary care.
Supplement or medication May be considered for a specific problem under professional guidance Safety and evidence depend on the substance and dog; over-the-counter availability does not establish safety. Ask a veterinarian before giving any product or changing a dose.

Food-stuffed toys: enrichment, not a treatment

A food-stuffed toy can give a dog an activity involving licking and chewing. ASPCA notes that this approach may work in mild separation-anxiety cases, but a highly anxious dog may not eat while alone. Moderate or severe cases call for a structured behavior plan, not reliance on a toy. Introduce the toy when you can observe the dog, and make sure its size and construction suit that individual dog.

Pheromones: an optional aid with uncertain benefit

A 2021 Veterinary Evidence review of dog-appeasing pheromones appraised eight controlled trials. It rated the evidence weak, found no evidence that a spray, diffuser, or collar was superior, and concluded that clinical benefit remained undetermined. The review reported limited signals in particular situations, including thunderstorm fear, shelter barking, and hospital stress; those findings do not establish that a diffuser will calm a newly adopted dog. A separate study addressed newly adopted puppies and fears of unfamiliar people and surroundings, but its indexed record does not provide enough outcome detail to quantify a general benefit.

How can I tell if my newly adopted dog has separation anxiety?

Look for a pattern linked to being left alone or separated from a particular person, rather than assuming that any early unsettled behavior is separation anxiety. Note what happens during departures and absences, whether the dog can eat or rest, and whether distress is persistent or escalating. Refusal of food while alone can be a sign that a food toy is not enough; it does not by itself diagnose the cause.

Changes of home or guardian and disrupted routines can be associated with separation-related distress. A veterinarian can assess whether health issues are contributing and help distinguish a behavior problem from other causes. For moderate or severe separation anxiety, ASPCA describes gradual desensitization and counterconditioning and recommends support from a qualified professional; progress should be planned around the dog’s actual response, not forced through prolonged distress.

What should I avoid?

  • Punishment or harsh handling. Do not yell at, jerk, or punish a fearful or anxious dog; these methods can intensify distress.
  • Assuming a crate is calming. If confinement triggers panting, persistent howling, or frantic escape attempts, use a safer alternative instead.
  • Unsupervised human products. Do not give human sleep aids, supplements, CBD products, prescription drugs, or calming products without veterinary advice. Their risks and evidence vary by ingredient and animal.
  • Ignoring supplement ingredients. Check labels for xylitol. ASPCA warns that xylitol can cause low blood sugar and liver injury in dogs. Keep supplements and calming chews secured so a dog cannot eat a large amount.
  • Treating a product as a replacement for care. A toy, chew, or diffuser should not delay assessment when distress is significant, persistent, or getting worse.

Severe sedation, inability to stand, tremors, repeated vomiting, or suspected toxic exposure warrants prompt contact with a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. ASPCA provides animal poison-control information; keep the product packaging available when seeking advice.

When should I contact a veterinarian or behavior professional?

Contact a veterinarian if distress is severe, persists, worsens, or comes with other concerning symptoms. An assessment can consider medical contributors and whether a treatment plan is appropriate. Do not try to diagnose or medicate the dog based only on a product label or online symptom list.

For behavior problems, a veterinarian can advise whether referral to a qualified veterinary behavior professional is appropriate. Gradual desensitization and counterconditioning may be part of a plan for separation anxiety. Medication may be considered under veterinary oversight when distress prevents progress; it is not a substitute for an individualized assessment and behavior plan.

In the United States, the FDA announced on May 6, 2026, approval of Tessie (tasipimidine oral solution) for noise aversion and separation anxiety in dogs. The FDA says it is prescription-only because veterinary expertise is necessary to diagnose and treat those conditions. This approval is a U.S.-specific regulatory fact, not a recommendation to medicate a newly adopted dog. Read the FDA announcement.
