If you find a red mark near your pet or a rusty smear where a mite was crushed, that alone does not show that your animal was bitten. A crushed mite can leave red pigment behind.
What red clover mites do—and do not do
Clover mites are tiny reddish or reddish-brown arachnids that feed by sucking plant juices, commonly from lawn grasses and clover. They may wander indoors through small openings near windows, doors, or foundations, but their presence inside does not mean they are feeding on a pet. How to recognize a clover mite
They are smaller than a pinhead, usually reddish or reddish-brown, and have eight legs. One useful clue is their first pair of legs, which is much longer than the other three pairs. Color alone is not enough to identify every tiny red arthropod, so do not use appearance by itself to explain a pet’s skin symptoms. University of Minnesota Extension
Why a crushed mite can leave a red mark
A rusty or red smear is not necessarily blood from a bite. When a clover mite is crushed, its body pigments can stain light-colored walls, carpet, fabric, or paper. Kentucky Extension specifically notes that the red stains are the mite’s pigments, not blood. Kentucky Extension

What to do if you find mites indoors
For a few mites
Remove them with a vacuum cleaner or wipe them up with a moist cloth. Avoid squashing them on pale or absorbent surfaces, where their pigment may leave a stain. These steps remove the insects from the home; they are not a treatment for a cat or dog. University of Minnesota Extension
For repeated or heavy indoor appearances
Minnesota Extension describes a clean, bare-soil strip around the house as a barrier option for recurring invasions. For large numbers, professional exterior pest control may be considered. If you use any pesticide, follow the product label directions; do not apply a household product to a pet unless its label specifically permits that use and a veterinarian advises it.

When a pet’s itching or skin changes need a veterinarian
Clover mites do not explain persistent itching or skin changes simply because they are present in the home. Other causes—including distinct mite-related conditions—can affect pets. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes canine sarcoptic mange as a separate condition that can cause intense itching and skin changes. If your cat or dog has ongoing or concerning symptoms, contact a veterinarian rather than treating the animal for fleas or mites based on a clover-mite sighting.
