The breed’s standard describes a typical Xolo as “calm, tranquil, aloof and attentive,” but that is a general breed description—not a guarantee about an individual dog.
Is a Xoloitzcuintli a good choice for a first-time owner?
It can be, if you are prepared for steady involvement rather than expecting an automatically easy, low-maintenance companion. The American Kennel Club (AKC) calls for consistent training, clear boundaries, early socialization, and puppy training classes. Its activity guidance also includes long walks and upbeat play. These needs do not make the breed categorically unsuitable for novices, but they do make preparation and follow-through important.
Neither the AKC nor the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) gives a blanket “good” or “bad” rating for first-time owners. The practical conclusion is an inference from their care guidance: a novice willing to build a routine and seek qualified instruction may be better prepared than someone looking for a dog that needs little training or activity.
What is a Xolo’s temperament like?
The AKC-printed breed standard says: “Typical Xolo temperament is calm, tranquil, aloof and attentive.” The AKC breed profile also describes the Xolo as a loving companion and vigilant watchdog, while the CKC notes that the breed can be aloof toward strangers. Taken together, those descriptions suggest a dog that may be devoted to its household and observant without necessarily greeting every visitor warmly.

These are descriptions of the breed, not a promise about an individual dog. Temperament is one reason to plan early, thoughtful socialization: help a puppy encounter people and everyday situations in a considered way instead of assuming it will be outgoing with everyone.
What training and socialization should you plan for?
The AKC recommends a consistent training regimen, clearly defined boundaries, early socialization, and puppy training classes. It does not prescribe a specific method or schedule, nor does it promise that attending classes alone will resolve behavior problems. For a first-time owner, the practical task is to keep expectations and household rules consistent and to ask a qualified trainer or veterinarian for help if a concern develops.

- Start with a puppy class. Arrange a suitable class and early socialization rather than waiting until unwanted habits are established; the AKC calls both important.
- Agree on household boundaries. Decide which behaviors and spaces are allowed, then have everyone in the home respond consistently.
- Keep training part of the routine. Use regular, age-appropriate practice and seek qualified guidance when you are unsure how to handle a behavior.
How much exercise does a Xolo need?
AKC guidance says Xolos enjoy long walks and upbeat play, and that young dogs need substantial exercise and structured playtime. The CKC says large Xolos need daily exercise and regular walks. Neither organization gives one daily time target that applies across all ages and sizes, so do not treat a single minutes-per-day figure as a universal breed rule.
Plan to discuss age-appropriate activity with your breeder and veterinarian, especially as a puppy grows. Build walks and play into the day, and consider how to provide suitable engagement when weather or your schedule limits outdoor activity. Xoloitzcuintli come in toy, miniature, and standard sizes; size alone does not establish the energy level of an individual dog.

How does care differ between hairless and coated Xolos?
The AKC recognizes hairless and coated varieties. Their practical upkeep differs, particularly around skin and sun exposure.
| Variety or age | Care to plan for |
|---|---|
| Hairless adult | AKC says adult hairless dogs need minimal grooming. For prolonged direct sun exposure, it recommends sunscreen; ask a veterinarian which product is appropriate. |
| Young hairless | AKC says younger dogs may experience adolescent acne. The breed guidance does not name a treatment, so consult a veterinarian about persistent skin concerns or product choices. |
| Coated | AKC says the short coat needs only occasional brushing. |
| Either variety, in cold weather | CKC recommends sweaters in colder winter months. |
CKC advises limiting bathing and lotions to once or twice a month or as needed to avoid stripping natural oils. It also recommends sunscreen in summer. Because the breed guidance does not identify a sunscreen brand or active ingredient, get veterinary advice rather than assuming any particular product or skin treatment is suitable.

What health and upkeep questions should you ask?
The AKC lists patella and hip evaluations, a cardiac exam, and an ophthalmologist evaluation among the health tests recommended by the national breed club. Ask a breeder what screening has been done and request the relevant records; the list is a set of evaluations to discuss, not a diagnosis or a prediction that a particular dog will develop a problem.
For routine care, the AKC advises regular ear checks, frequent tooth-brushing with toothpaste made for dogs, and regular veterinary checkups. Ask your veterinarian how to fit those checks and care tasks into your dog’s individual routine.
