Prepare a kitten-friendly litter area
Choose a tray large enough for your kitten to enter, turn around, and dig, with low sides that are easy to step over. Put it somewhere quiet and accessible, away from food, water, and sleeping spots. Make sure a dog, another pet, or household traffic cannot block or startle the kitten while it is using the box.
A small, quiet starter room helps a new kitten find the tray without having to navigate the whole home. Set up food, water, resting places, and toys there too, keeping the litter box separate from the eating and sleeping areas. For a multi-cat home, VCA recommends one box per cat plus one extra, with boxes spread out where competition may occur (VCA litter-box training guidance).
Choose litter and a box the kitten can use
If possible, ask the kitten’s previous caregiver which litter it used and begin with that type. Familiarity can make the transition easier. Veterinary behavior guidance notes that many cats prefer fine, clumping clay litter and an uncovered box, but preferences vary; these are starting points, not rules for every kitten (International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten-care guide; VCA).

A standard, low-sided tray is a straightforward first choice. Do not assume an automated litter box is suitable: check its age and weight limits, and bear in mind that automated trays may upset some kittens.
Introduce the box without forcing it
- Prepare the room before arrival. Put the tray, food, water, resting places, and toys in the quiet starter room. Keep the tray away from food and sleep areas.
- Let the kitten come out of its carrier and explore. Keep the route to the box clear and calm. Many kittens notice a nearby tray on their own.
- Observe and offer the box calmly. After a nap, or if your kitten sniffs or paws at the floor, make sure the tray is available. Give it time to investigate; do not push it into the box or frighten it.
- Expand access after box use. Once your kitten has used the tray, offer supervised exploration of more of the home. When you cannot supervise, return it to the prepared room until its box use is consistent.
If your kitten avoids the box or has an accident
Do not scold, shout, strike, or carry a frightened kitten to the tray. Punishment can make the experience more frightening without addressing why the kitten avoided the box. Clean the soiled area thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove odor, then check the setup.

- Can the kitten reach the tray easily, including without encountering another pet or a busy passage?
- Is the box clean and in a quiet, accessible location?
- Are the tray sides too high, or is the box too small or covered?
- Could the litter type be unfamiliar or unappealing?
If the kitten repeatedly chooses one spot, consider placing a box closer to that area while you improve the setup. To identify a preference, change one feature at a time—such as litter, box style, or location—or offer nearby alternatives as a paired choice. Keep every box clean during a trial.
Keep the box accessible and clean
Scoop at least once a day and clean and replace litter routinely, following the litter’s care needs. Place the tray where your kitten can use it without being disturbed by people or other pets. In a home with multiple cats, provide one box per cat plus one extra, and avoid clustering all boxes where one animal can guard access.

When to call a veterinarian
Repeated accidents can have medical causes, so do not treat persistent out-of-box elimination as a training issue alone. Contact a veterinarian if accidents continue, or if a kitten that had been using the box reliably starts having them. General litter-box guidance cannot determine the cause for an individual kitten.
