The toy provides a chewing activity without adding an animal-protein chew. If you want an edible alternative, ask your veterinarian what ingredients and fat level fit your dog’s history—there is no one edible chew established as suitable for every sensitive-stomach dog.
What to give your dog instead of a pig ear
| Option | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stuffable rubber chew toy | Chewing and food-based engagement without the toy itself being edible | Choose an appropriate size and durability, supervise use, and remove it if torn. Use only stuffing the dog already tolerates. Texas A&M warns that swallowed toy pieces can cause choking or intestinal obstruction. |
| A portion of the dog’s regular food | A familiar reward that avoids introducing a new ingredient | Use it only if appropriate for the dog’s current diet, including any veterinary diet or food trial. Cornell recommends using part of the primary diet as treats rather than adding random scraps. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine |
| Commercial edible or dental chew | Chewing; some products also have a dental purpose | Check the full ingredients, fat and calorie content, hardness, size, and compatibility with medical diets. Ask the veterinarian if uncertain. No universal sensitive-stomach recommendation is established. WSAVA |
For a dog with a sensitive stomach, the label alone cannot tell you whether an edible chew is a good fit. Consider known ingredient tolerance, fat content, current symptoms, and whether the dog is following a prescribed diet or food trial. WSAVA cautions that conventional treats may not suit dogs with dietary sensitivities or veterinary-prescribed diets.
Why pig ears can be a poor fit
VCA describes pig ears as high in fat, notes possible harmful bacterial contamination, and warns they can contribute to intestinal blockage. Excessive amounts of high-fat treats can also contribute to pancreatitis. These risks do not mean every pig ear is contaminated or every dog will become ill. VCA Animal Hospitals
Animal-based treats also call for careful handling. During the FDA’s pig-ear-associated Salmonella outbreak investigation, 154 human cases were reported across 34 states, with 35 hospitalizations. The FDA said the outbreak appeared over by October 30, 2019, and that blanket advice to avoid all pig ears was no longer in place; it continued to advise careful sourcing and safe handling. A separate event in 2025 illustrates why it is useful to check current notices: the FDA recalled one lot of Supercan Pig Ear Slivers after Salmonella testing. That was a single-lot recall, not evidence that all pig-ear products are contaminated. FDA: Supercan Pig Ear Slivers recall
How to choose a chew for your dog
- Ingredient fit: For food in a toy or an edible chew, favor ingredients the dog has already tolerated. “Single ingredient,” “natural,” or “digestible” marketing does not establish that a particular dog will tolerate it.
- Fat and calories: Account for both when comparing edible chews. WSAVA’s 2025 general guideline is that treats make up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calorie intake; an individual dog may need different advice from its veterinarian. WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines
- Hardness: Avoid excessively hard chews, including antlers and hooves. A chew’s popularity or “natural” label does not establish dental or digestive suitability. WSAVA
- Size and chewing style: Choose a size appropriate for the dog, and consider whether it tends to gulp food or swallow chunks. Remove any chew or toy that breaks into pieces or becomes small enough to swallow.
- Diet restrictions: If your dog is on a veterinary diet or food trial, check with the veterinary team before adding a treat or stuffing. Even a small addition can be incompatible with the plan.
Use a chew with fewer avoidable risks
- Start with a familiar option. Try a correctly sized stuffable rubber toy with the dog’s regular food, if that food is suitable for use this way.
- Supervise the chewing session. Stop if your dog tears pieces off, chews aggressively enough to damage the toy, or tries to swallow chunks. Discard damaged items.
- Keep edible treats in the calorie budget. Use WSAVA’s no-more-than-10%-of-daily-calories guideline as a general limit, not an individual prescription.
- Handle animal-based treats carefully if you choose them. Monitor your dog, pick up the item after use, wash your hands, and clean surfaces it contacted, following FDA safe-handling advice.
- Check with the veterinarian before experimenting when there is a medical reason for caution. This includes a prescribed diet, food trial, known dietary sensitivity, or recurring vomiting or diarrhea.
When stomach symptoms need veterinary attention
Recurring diarrhea or stomach upset is a reason to contact your veterinarian, not to keep trying new chews. Cornell notes that chronic digestive upset can have underlying causes and that sensitive dogs may need a slower diet transition. A veterinarian can help assess the symptoms and advise what, if anything, fits the dog’s diet.
