If your pet seems overwhelmed at a public event, calmly create distance from the crowd, noise, or other apparent trigger. Give your pet room to disengage, and end the outing if distress continues or you cannot make the setting manageable. For a dog, keep the leash secure and ask people not to approach or touch them.
What to do in the moment
- Pause and assess. Stay calm and notice what is happening around your pet. A crowd, loud sound, unfamiliar animal, or person approaching may be contributing, but a single behavior does not prove a specific cause.
- Create space. Move away from the apparent trigger and let your pet disengage. Do not insist on greetings or let strangers crowd an uneasy animal. For dogs, keep control of the leash while moving to a quieter place. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises: “If your dog seems uneasy, remove them from the situation to reduce the risk of biting.”
- Leave if distress continues. If your pet does not settle, or the event remains too busy or loud, take them home. An outing is optional; continuing exposure is not a measure of success.
Signs your pet may be distressed
Look at the whole situation and your pet’s behavior rather than relying on a single sign. The ASPCA’s guidance on dogs and strangers notes that dogs may be fearful or stressed around unfamiliar people, while its cat anxiety guidance lists possible signs such as hiding, withdrawing socially, panting, hypervigilance, dilated pupils, aggression, reduced eating, and twitching tails or ears. These signs can have different explanations and do not, on their own, establish a diagnosis.
When to seek veterinary help
Go to a veterinary hospital immediately for emergency signs
The ASPCA advises immediate veterinary-hospital care for life-threatening signs including trouble breathing, seizures, unresponsiveness or unconsciousness, and bleeding. Do not mistake ordinary nervous behavior by itself for an emergency; act urgently if one of these serious signs occurs.
Arrange follow-up for recurring or dangerous behavior
Talk with a veterinarian if fear or aggression seems excessive or unprovoked. After aggressive behavior, seek professional help; a veterinarian can advise on appropriate qualified behavior support. Do not give medication or supplements for behavioral problems without consulting a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist first.

Plan ahead for future events
If your dog is frightened by crowds
The ASPCA advises leaving a dog at home if crowds cause stress or panic. Avoid known triggers where possible rather than treating attendance as a training goal. A leash helps you maintain control of a dog in public; it is not a treatment for anxiety.
If your cat is staying home during festivities
The available ASPCA guidance gives general cat anxiety signs and at-home safe-space advice, not a specific rule for taking cats to public events. For a cat staying home during loud festivities, prepare a quiet indoor room away from the activity, with water and a litter box, and let the cat remain undisturbed. These are home-preparation steps, not instructions for handling a distressed cat in a crowd.

If costumes are part of the event
The ASPCA cautions that costumes cause undue stress for some pets. Do not dress your pet unless you know they enjoy it, and make sure any outfit does not restrict movement, vision, breathing, barking, or meowing.
