Start by asking a local shelter, municipal animal services agency, or rescue what it needs now and what each role requires.
Choose the kind of help that fits your capacity
Donations, volunteer work, and fostering meet different needs. Many shelters face resource, staffing, veterinary, and capacity challenges, but the most useful help depends on the organization and its current priorities. The ASPCA’s position statement on shelter responsibilities describes those pressures and the responsibilities shelters retain when animals are placed in foster homes.
| Option | Best suited to | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Donate | Someone able to contribute money or useful goods, but not regular time or in-home care. | What the organization does, what it makes public about its processes and outcomes, and which current need a gift can support. |
| Volunteer | Someone able to attend shifts and do the tasks a local program needs. | Schedule, training, minimum age, physical duties, and whether individual or group participation is available. |
| Foster | Someone able to provide temporary care at home and follow the organization’s guidance. | Expected duration and workload, training, supplies and medical coverage, emergency support, resident-pet precautions, and the placement plan. |
How to donate responsibly
Begin with a nearby shelter, municipal animal services agency, or rescue whose work matches your priorities. Review its descriptions of intake, animal care, transfers, and outcomes where available. Public information about key processes and policies can help you assess whether an organization’s approach aligns with your values; transparency is a trust check, not a certification or proof that a particular recipient is the right one for every donor.
Ask whether unrestricted funding or a gift designated for a particular program would be more useful. If you want to give food, equipment, or other goods, check the organization’s current needs list first rather than buying supplies it may not be able to use. There is no universal donation allocation or single recipient that suits every person.

How to volunteer
Ask the organization which roles it needs and how to apply. Animal-facing work is only one possibility: practical support can include sorting donated goods, cleaning and resetting enclosures, restocking, washing dishes or transport cages, helping at adoption events, driving animals to appointments, making calls, or providing office and promotional support.
Requirements differ among organizations, so confirm the schedule, training, age rules, physical tasks, and whether the program accepts groups. As one location-specific example, the ASPCA’s New York City Adoption Center says volunteers must be at least 16; some roles may involve standing for up to three hours and lifting up to 35 pounds. These are requirements for that program, not general rules for shelters elsewhere. See the ASPCA NYC Adoption Center volunteer information for its details.

What to ask before fostering
Fostering is temporary care in a home while an animal prepares for adoption, recovers, receives socialization, or waits for another appropriate outcome. It can give an animal respite from shelter conditions and free space or staff attention for others. Needs vary: one animal may need a quiet place, while another may require frequent feeding, treatment, isolation, or extra time.
Before agreeing, ask the shelter or rescue for clear expectations on these points:

- Training and support: What instruction will you receive, whom do you contact with routine questions, and what is the emergency process?
- Supplies and expenses: Which food, equipment, medication, and veterinary costs are covered, and how are they obtained or reimbursed?
- Veterinary care: Which clinic should you use, how do you arrange appointments, and what should you do if the animal becomes ill outside normal hours?
- Resident pets and household setup: Is separation required? Ask about vaccination, isolation, and gradual introductions before bringing a foster animal home.
- Adoption and placement: Who makes placement decisions, who handles adopter contact, and are you expected to help with introductions or promotion?
Do not assume every program covers the same costs or supplies the same equipment. Best Friends’ foster guidance describes the kinds of coverage and veterinary arrangements organizations may specify; the organization you foster for must tell you what applies to its program. The ASPCA also describes programs that provide supplies and veterinary services, but those arrangements should not be presumed elsewhere.
Fostering may end with a goodbye. Agree on the temporary nature of the role and the organization’s placement process before taking an animal home; a foster placement is not automatically a permanent adoption, and no one can promise a particular outcome. The ASPCA states that shelters retain responsibility for animals in foster homes and must ensure they move in a timely manner to adoption, transfer, or another appropriate outcome.
