Only allow students to handle a classroom lizard when an adult can supervise closely, the animal can be supported continuously, and the room is set up for safe hygiene. If the lizard is unfamiliar with handling, unwell, distressed, or the class cannot meet those conditions, let students observe without touching. Children under five should not touch reptiles or their environments, according to CDC guidance.
Decide whether students should handle the lizard
Hands-on contact is optional; a no-contact demonstration is the safer choice whenever the animal or classroom is not suited to handling. Before the demonstration, check school policy and ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian about the individual lizard’s health, temperament, familiarity with handling, and appropriate technique. The right hold and signs of stress vary by species and individual, so there is no universal classroom hold.
Consider student age and health as well. CDC says reptiles and amphibians are not suitable for settings with children under five; its reptile guidance says children under five should not handle or touch reptiles or their environments. Also consider allergies, asthma, or other health conditions when deciding whether to permit contact. - Choose observation instead if the lizard is ill, unfamiliar with handling, or showing signs of distress.
- Do not proceed unless an adult can directly supervise and support the animal throughout contact.
- Choose observation if you cannot provide a designated interaction area and immediate handwashing.
Prepare the classroom and explain the rules
Set up a clearly designated interaction area away from food preparation, serving, and eating. Keep the lizard, its habitat, and its equipment out of food-preparation sinks and areas. Do not let the animal roam freely around the room.

Before bringing the lizard out, tell students to move calmly, avoid touching its face, and never grab it. No one should eat, drink, or touch their mouth while near the animal. Explain that they must follow the supervising adult’s instructions and wash their hands immediately after contact.
Support the lizard throughout any contact
An adult should supervise directly from the start of handling to the end. If the veterinarian has advised that this lizard may be handled, keep the interaction brief and maintain continuous support of its body and limbs. Never grab the lizard by the tail. Stop promptly if it struggles or appears distressed; return it to its secure enclosure rather than passing it to another student.

The NSW Department of Education’s classroom handling guidance emphasizes maintaining the animal’s well-being and supporting it properly. Reptiles can carry Salmonella while appearing clean and healthy. Germs can spread through contact with the animal, its habitat items, or contaminated surfaces. Keep food and drink away from the demonstration and prevent students from touching their mouths while around the lizard.

- If soap and running water are temporarily unavailable: CDC classroom guidance permits hand sanitizer as a temporary measure. Wash with soap and water as soon as possible afterward. See CDC tips for staying healthy at animal exhibits.
- Clean contacted surfaces: Clean and disinfect surfaces that touched the animal, following veterinary advice on a reptile-safe disinfectant and how often to use it. Do not clean the habitat, feeders, or equipment in a sink or area used to prepare, serve, or eat food.
