Yes. Many cats with cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) adapt to their coordination difficulties and live full, happy lives. CH is generally non-progressive and is not, by itself, painful or a reason to assume a cat has a poor quality of life. Each cat is different, so look at whether the individual can stay comfortable, meet daily needs safely, and enjoy activities and interactions.

What cerebellar hypoplasia means for a cat

The cerebellum helps coordinate movement and balance. With CH, it has not developed fully, so a kitten may appear wobbly when it begins standing and walking. Feline panleukopenia infection during pregnancy is a common cause; infection in the first weeks after birth can also be associated with the condition. Cats Protection’s overview and VCA’s veterinary guidance describe these signs and causes.

Signs can include a swaying or jerky gait, a wide stance, high-stepping movement, loss of balance, and head or intention tremors. Tremors may be more noticeable when a cat is trying to do something purposeful, such as eating, drinking, or playing. The severity varies: some cats have mild coordination problems, while others need more help navigating their surroundings.

Does CH get worse, cause pain, or shorten life?

CH is described as non-progressive: the coordination impairment does not ordinarily worsen over time, and cats may adapt how they move and do everyday tasks. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that affected cats can be suitable pets. VCA describes CH itself as non-painful and non-contagious, and says many affected cats can have a normal life expectancy with appropriate care.

These are general expectations, not a guarantee for an individual cat. CH has no treatment that repairs the underdeveloped cerebellum; care focuses on confirming the diagnosis, addressing other health needs, and making daily life manageable and safe.

How to judge an individual cat’s quality of life

A wobbly gait alone does not tell you whether a cat is happy. Consider the whole cat: physical comfort, emotional well-being, ability to engage with its surroundings, and interest in preferred activities. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s position statement on feline well-being emphasizes that physical, emotional, and cognitive needs are connected.

Ask a veterinarian for help if you are concerned about comfort, daily function, or changes in behavior.

Get a veterinary assessment for suspected CH

Do not assume that wobbliness means CH. Other neurological problems, including epilepsy and some infections, can look similar. A veterinarian can consider the cat’s history and examine it; the diagnostic route depends on the case. Imaging such as CT or MRI may be considered, but it is not necessary for every cat. VCA notes that routine laboratory tests do not detect CH, while MRI may show a smaller-than-normal cerebellum.

  • Improve footing: Put rugs or other grippy surfaces on routes the cat uses if slippery floors make walking difficult.
  • Make feeding and drinking steadier: Try sturdy, tip-resistant bowls. A slightly raised bowl helps some cats, but base the choice on the cat’s posture and ease of eating.
  • Choose a usable litter tray: A spacious, deep, stable tray may help. Higher sides can offer support, but the cat still needs to enter and leave comfortably.
  • Help the cat reach valued places: Make favorite resting spots easier to access. A carpeted ramp can help with a raised spot; cushions or rugs below a windowsill may soften a landing.
  • Manage outdoor risks: Keep the cat indoors or provide access to a safely fenced garden or run, where hazards are easier to control. Microchipping is a sensible safeguard in case the cat escapes.
  • Keep indoor life engaging: Offer toys and puzzle feeders suited to the cat’s coordination and preferences.

When considering a ramp, mat, bowl, or tray, focus on stability, grip, access, and ease of cleaning—and whether the change actually makes a valued activity easier. The sources do not establish that a particular brand or design is best.

There is no reliable percentage for how many affected cats are happy

Available guidance describes the prognosis qualitatively: many cats adapt and can live full lives. It does not establish a percentage of cats with CH that are happy or provide a controlled comparison of home aids. The most useful guide is the individual cat’s comfort, safety, and engagement, considered with veterinary advice.
