No—do not let your dog approach, chase, touch, or swim with a wild dolphin. Dolphins are wild animals, and an encounter can put both animals at risk. Keep your dog under control, give the dolphin space, and follow the rules for the place you are visiting.
Why dogs and dolphins should keep their distance
A wild dolphin is not a predictable playmate. NOAA Fisheries advises people not to approach or interact with wild marine mammals, including by swimming with, touching, or trying to get a reaction from them. Dolphins may bite or pull people underwater; those warnings establish a reason for caution, not a measured likelihood that a dog will be bitten. NOAA’s guidance on feeding and harassing marine mammals and its advice on wild dolphins both stress keeping interactions at a distance.
The risk goes both ways. NOAA says wild animals can injure or spread disease to pets, while pets can disturb or injure marine wildlife and may spread disease to it. Uncontrolled dogs can also disturb and harm coastal wildlife, according to the UK Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code. There is no established evidence that dogs and wild dolphins can safely socialize.
What to do if your dog sees a dolphin
- Keep your dog with you. Use a lead where local rules allow dogs, and maintain control rather than letting the dog run toward the water. UK coastal guidance advises visitors to keep dogs in sight and on a lead.
- Do not encourage contact. Do not let your dog bark at, chase, or enter the water to reach the dolphin. Do not try to attract the dolphin, feed it, touch it, or stage a meeting.
- Give the dolphin room. If it comes close, stay calm, avoid contact and food, and move away slowly when you can. The UK code advises moving away slowly when wild wildlife approaches.
- Leave if control is difficult. If you cannot keep your dog under control or the area is crowded with wildlife, choose another route or take the dog away from the shore.
- Keep away from an animal in trouble. If a dolphin is injured or stranded, do not let your dog approach. Contact the relevant local wildlife authority or stranding responder; the right reporting contact depends on where you are.
How far away should you stay?
There is no single worldwide distance rule. NOAA’s general U.S. marine-life viewing guidance recommends staying at least 50 yards from dolphins and porpoises, and notes that some locations may require 100 yards. These are U.S. guidance distances, not universal rules; requirements vary by location and species. Check the current rules from the local wildlife authority before your visit.

Rules can also depend on whether you are on shore or in a vessel. For example, a Victorian government brochure says that when in a boat, a dog should not enter the water within 150 metres of a dolphin. That is specific Victorian guidance, not a distance to apply elsewhere. See NOAA’s Marine Life Viewing Guidelines and its location and species guidance for U.S. context, and check the relevant local rules for your destination.

No. Do not put your dog in the water to interact with a wild dolphin. NOAA says not to attempt to swim with or touch wild marine mammals. Feeding or encouraging an approach can also change dolphins’ behavior and expose them to hazards, including boat propellers and fishing gear. Keep your dog out of the interaction even if the dolphin appears calm.
