Pets have real environmental impacts, but there is no single footprint that applies to every animal or every household. The strongest global estimates here concern dry dog and cat food production; waste and wildlife interactions add other impacts. What a pet eats, how its food is produced, and whether a cat roams freely all matter, and comparisons can change depending on which environmental impact is measured.
How large is the environmental footprint of pet food?
A 2021 global assessment estimated that annual dry pet food production caused 56–151 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions, equal to 1.1%–2.9% of global agricultural emissions. It also estimated 41–58 million hectares of agricultural land use (0.8%–1.2% of global agricultural land use) and 5–11 cubic kilometres of freshwater use (0.2%–0.4% of agricultural water extraction).
These are estimates for global dry pet food production—not a total for all pets or all parts of ownership. The study used economic-value allocation for animal by-products, a choice that affects how much of the production burden is attributed to pet food. Its ranges reflect uncertainty and assumptions.
What do estimates for dogs and cats show?
In a 2017 US study, dogs and cats consumed an estimated 19% ± 2% of the human dietary energy total and 33% ± 9% of human animal-derived dietary energy. The study also estimated that their consumption of animal products was associated with 25%–30% of the environmental impacts of human animal production in the categories it assessed: land, water, fossil fuel, phosphate and biocides.

Those figures are model-based US estimates, not global totals. They describe particular comparisons and impact categories; they should not be read as saying that pets cause 30% of all human environmental impact.
Why can one pet-food diet look better than another?
There is no single measure that captures every trade-off. Greenhouse-gas emissions, land use, freshwater withdrawal, water scarcity, eutrophication and acidification are distinct impact measures. Ingredient mix, animal-derived ingredients, and the way by-products are counted can change the result, as can the life-cycle stages included.

A 2022 analysis of sampled dog and cat diets reported the highest impacts for wet diets and the lowest for dry diets across its evaluated categories; higher energy from animal ingredients was correlated with higher impacts. That finding applies to the diets and model studied, not every product or production system.
A 2024 life-cycle assessment illustrates why a climate-only ranking can mislead. For one specific wet vegan dog food compared with a modeled meat-based alternative, the study estimated 37% lower climate-change impact, 97% higher land-use impact and nearly 300% higher eutrophication. This single-product comparison is not a general verdict on vegan food, all dog foods, or cat diets.

What to check when comparing products
- Impact category: Compare like with like—for example, climate impact with climate impact. Water use and water scarcity are not interchangeable.
- Ingredients and allocation: Check the ingredient mix and how animal by-products are treated in the comparison.
- Life-cycle boundary: The European Commission-endorsed Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for prepared cat and dog food cover ingredient sourcing, packaging production, manufacturing, distribution, use and packaging end of life. FEDIAF describes the rules as endorsed in 2018 and as setting guidance on data quality, allocation and impact categories. This framework describes how to assess products; it does not establish that a particular product has a low footprint.
- Evidence quality and context: Note geography, data quality, and whether figures are measured, modeled or allocated. A vague “eco-friendly” claim is not a comparable life-cycle result.
Do pet waste and wildlife interactions matter?
Yes. A 2024 global assessment estimated that domestic cats and dogs excrete 4.32 teragrams of nitrogen per year (range 1.27–7.38) and 0.76 teragrams of phosphorus per year (range 0.31–1.21). It also modeled associated emissions of 43 gigagrams of nitrous oxide-nitrogen per year (range 13–74) and 864 ± 654 gigagrams of ammonia-nitrogen per year. These are estimates derived from literature-based parameters, not direct global monitoring totals; the study emphasizes that pet-waste streams are severely under-reported. They do not establish that any one disposal practice resolves the wider impacts.
Wildlife effects are a separate pathway from food production and waste. WWF says limiting cats’ free roaming can help reduce predation on small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. It also advises against releasing pets into the wild and recommends legal, responsible sourcing for exotic pets.

What can a pet owner reasonably do?
- Avoid overfeeding and reduce food waste; this avoids using more food than the animal needs.
- When comparing foods, look for transparent, comparable life-cycle information rather than assuming a premium or “human-grade” label means lower impact. The evidence summarized here does not identify a best brand.
- Do not change a dog’s or cat’s diet on environmental grounds alone. These environmental comparisons cannot determine whether a particular food is nutritionally suitable for an individual animal; preserve nutritional adequacy when considering any change.
- Where feasible, prevent cats from roaming freely, and never release pets or exotic animals into the environment.
The available quantitative evidence is concentrated on dog and cat food, with additional modeled estimates for their waste. It does not comprehensively quantify the full ownership footprint or provide comparable estimates for every companion species, so these figures should not be added together as though they measure the same thing.
