If your cat has trouble breathing, collapses, or develops sudden illness after a sting, food, medication, vaccine, or other exposure, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Anaphylaxis is a rare but potentially fatal allergic reaction that can worsen within minutes; do not wait to see if severe signs pass.

What anaphylaxis is in cats

Anaphylaxis is a severe, immediate allergic reaction involving the body beyond a single irritated patch of skin. In a sensitized cat, an exposure can trigger an excessive immune response; the substances released can affect multiple tissues and organs. The reaction can interfere with breathing and circulation and may lead to shock. Its severity can depend partly on the trigger, the amount, and how it entered the body. Not every allergy or episode of itching is anaphylaxis. Merck Veterinary Manual

Possible causes and how quickly signs can appear

Potential triggers include insect stings or bites, food, drugs, vaccines or other injections, and blood products. These are possible causes, not a prediction that a cat will react to any particular exposure. Merck Veterinary Manual

Signs of anaphylactic shock commonly begin within seconds to minutes after exposure, according to Merck. For insect stings specifically, VCA says allergic reactions often appear within 20 minutes but may be delayed for hours. A delay does not rule out a sting-related reaction. VCA Animal Hospitals

Symptoms that need urgent attention

Signs vary between cats and can progress rapidly. Possible warning signs include:

  • Difficulty breathing or severe respiratory distress
  • Sudden vomiting or diarrhea
  • Excessive drooling, restlessness, or unusual excitement
  • Incoordination, weakness, or collapse
  • Pale gums, cold limbs, a fast heart rate with a weak pulse, or other signs of shock
  • Seizures; in severe cases, coma or death
  • Facial swelling or itching around the face or head

Hives or facial swelling may occur with an allergic reaction, but skin signs alone do not establish anaphylaxis. VCA describes facial or muzzle swelling, hives, vomiting or diarrhea, and restlessness as possible early signs that can progress to breathing difficulty or collapse. Do not use this distinction as a home diagnostic test: seek veterinary advice for a concerning reaction, and treat suspected anaphylaxis as an emergency. VCA Animal Hospitals

What to do if you suspect anaphylaxis

  1. Contact an emergency veterinarian and go for care immediately. Tell the clinic what may have triggered the reaction, when exposure occurred, and what signs you have seen, if you know.
  2. Do not wait for severe signs to resolve. Breathing difficulty, collapse, or other systemic symptoms after a possible exposure need urgent evaluation. Merck classifies anaphylaxis as an extreme emergency; its triage guidance treats allergic reaction with shock or airway obstruction as requiring immediate evaluation. Merck Veterinary Manual
  3. Do not try to manage suspected anaphylaxis with medication at home instead of obtaining care. Emergency drug choices and administration belong to veterinary professionals. Do not delay departure to experiment with a treatment.

How veterinarians treat anaphylaxis

Treatment depends on the cat’s condition and may include epinephrine, antihistamines, anti-inflammatory drugs, and fluids, as well as additional care for breathing problems. These are veterinary treatments, not a home dosing plan. Rapid professional assessment matters because anaphylaxis can affect breathing and circulation. Merck Veterinary Manual
