Flat dark spots—particularly on orange or orange-faced cats—may be benign lentigo; pale patches may be vitiligo. Redness, crusting, scaling, hair loss, discharge, pain, or a change in the spot’s shape or texture calls for veterinary assessment.
What the color change may mean
Start by noticing what the skin looks and feels like, not just whether it is lighter or darker. Flat pigment spots without other skin changes have different possible explanations from a raised, crusted, sore, or otherwise damaged area. Several conditions can affect the feline nasal planum, so a new mark should not automatically be treated as harmless.
Common pigment-related possibilities
Lentigo: flat dark spots
Lentigo can cause flat, dark pigment spots on the lips, eyelids, nose, or gums. It is especially associated with orange or orange-faced cats. The MSD Veterinary Manual describes lentigo spots as having no other clinical signs; they are not precancerous and have no medical consequence.
That description applies to flat pigment spots, not every dark mark. A raised, ulcerated, crusted, bleeding, or changing lesion should be assessed rather than assumed to be lentigo, since nasal lesions have a broader range of possible causes.

Vitiligo: loss of pigment
Vitiligo can cause pale areas on the nose, lip margins, and skin around the eyes; hair may also lose pigment. It is rare in cats and has been reported especially in Siamese cats. In the typical description, affected skin lacks inflammation, erosion, and crusting. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes feline vitiligo as cosmetic, while noting that pigment loss around the nose and eyes may increase susceptibility to actinic keratosis and potentially squamous cell carcinoma.
A pale patch by itself does not establish vitiligo. A veterinarian may consider the cat’s history and examination, and the specialist reference discusses biopsy when the presentation is atypical or other diseases need to be ruled out.

When a color change may be a skin problem
Nasal changes can also have infectious, inflammatory, immune-mediated, environmental, parasitic, genetic, neoplastic, or idiopathic causes. Skin disease may involve redness, scaling, thickening, discharge, odor, hair loss, or pain as well as a color change. History and physical examination help a veterinarian determine what is causing the lesion.
- More consistent with a pigment-only change: a flat mark or patch without visible inflammation, crusting, erosion, or other skin damage. This appearance can be seen with lentigo or vitiligo, but is not a home diagnosis.
- Needs assessment: a raised or damaged surface, bleeding, ulceration, crusting, scaling, redness, pain, discharge, hair loss, thickening, odor, or a change in shape or texture.
When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange an examination if the color change comes with any of the skin changes above, or if a spot is changing in shape or texture. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat is acutely unwell or the nose is injured or bleeding. There is no universal emergency threshold established for every nose-color change, so urgency should be judged with the cat’s overall condition and the nature of the lesion—not color alone.

What to expect from an assessment
The veterinarian can review when the change began and whether it has progressed, then examine the nose and any other affected skin. Because several different conditions can look similar, the next steps depend on the findings; a biopsy may be considered when the appearance is atypical or another disease must be excluded. No single home test or product response can establish the cause.
