Why Does My Cat Snore So Loud? 4 Common Reasons

Loud cat snoring can relate to facial anatomy, sleep position, airway inflammation, or an obstruction. New or difficult breathing needs veterinary attention.

Cats may snore because of their facial anatomy, sleeping position, upper-airway inflammation or infection, or an obstruction in the nasal passages. Extra tissue associated with excess weight can also contribute. Occasional snoring that has been present for a long time may be less concerning than a new or worsening sound—but snoring cannot be diagnosed by sound alone.

Why does my cat snore so loud?

A snore is noisy airflow, and several different issues can make air move less freely through a cat’s nose or upper airway. The sound alone cannot tell you which one is responsible. These are four common possibilities:

1. Short-faced anatomy

Persian and other brachycephalic cats have shortened facial bones and nasal passages. Smaller nostrils, and in some cats an elongated soft palate, can restrict airflow and make breathing noisy. The severity varies: a flat face does not mean every cat has airway disease, but persistent or difficult breathing should not be dismissed as normal for the breed. VCA Animal Hospitals explains brachycephalic airway syndrome in cats.

2. Sleeping position

A curled or awkward position that bends the head or neck can temporarily narrow the airway and change airflow, producing a snore. If the sound is new, persistent, or also happens when your cat is awake, do not assume posture is the cause.

3. Upper-airway inflammation or infection

An upper respiratory infection or chronic nasal inflammation (rhinitis) can cause congestion or discharge that narrows airflow. Nasal discharge, sneezing, or other changes in your cat’s health make a veterinary assessment more important.

4. Nasal obstruction or other contributing factors

A polyp, tumor, or foreign object in a nasal passage can obstruct airflow. Excess tissue around the upper airway associated with overweight can contribute, too. These possibilities can require a veterinarian to distinguish; you cannot identify them reliably at home.

When should I contact a veterinarian?

Contact your veterinarian about new or worsening snoring, noisy breathing while your cat is awake, coughing, nasal discharge, a changed meow, facial swelling, lethargy, a change in appetite, or less tolerance for play or exertion. PetMD’s guidance on cat snoring also recommends emergency care when stertor occurs with lethargy or loss of appetite, or noisy breathing occurs with exercise intolerance, decreased appetite, or hiding.

Open-mouth breathing or clear difficulty breathing is urgent. Seek veterinary care rather than waiting to see whether a home measure helps.

Two kinds of noisy breathing

Stertor is a lower-pitched snoring or snorting sound generally associated with the nose or back of the mouth. Stridor is higher-pitched and may reflect narrowing around the larynx or trachea. The distinction can help explain why breathing sounds differ, but it is not a way to diagnose the problem yourself. PetMD’s overview of stertor and stridor describes these sounds.

What can you do while arranging care?

Note when the sound happens—during sleep or while awake—and whether it is changing or accompanied by other symptoms. That history can help your veterinarian assess the problem. The examination and any further evaluation depend on the cat’s signs and findings; some internal structures, including the soft palate or larynx, may require sedation or anesthesia to inspect. VCA Animal Hospitals discusses snoring in pets.

If dry air may be contributing, PetMD suggests a humidifier near your cat’s sleeping area as a possible comfort measure. It will not treat an obstruction, infection, or congenital narrowing, and it should not delay care for new or concerning breathing signs.
