Black cats are not a breed, their coats can take on rusty highlights in sunlight, and their reputation for luck comes from human folklore—not anything inherent in the cats. Here are seven facts that separate what we know about their appearance from what people have believed about them and what shelter studies have actually found.
1. Eumelanin gives black fur its color
Black fur depends on eumelanin, the pigment responsible for dark coloration. PetMD describes black as the most common feline coat color, but does not provide a global count of cats by coat color. PetMD’s overview of black cats explains the pigment and other features of their coats.
2. Sunlight can give a black coat rusty highlights
After prolonged sun exposure, some black cats develop reddish or orange tones in their fur. Sunlight bleaches pigment in the hair, making the coat look lighter; the change is in the hair’s appearance, not evidence that the cat is becoming a different color.
3. Black is a coat color, not a breed
Many breeds and mixed-breed domestic cats can have black coats. The Bombay is the exception noted by PetMD: it is the only breed that is always black. A black cat’s coat alone therefore does not identify it as a Bombay.

4. Black cats can have several eye colors
Yellow or gold, orange or copper, and green are among the iris colors seen in black cats. Yellow eyes are not a rule: coat color does not mean every black cat has the same eye color.
5. Bad-luck lore reflects human history, not a property of cats
Black cats have been linked with bad luck in some European folklore. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County traces one strand of that association to 1200s rumors that the devil could take the form of a black cat. That is a historical belief, not evidence about cats—and it should not be treated as a universal view shared by every culture. The museum’s answer to whether black cats are really bad luck is “Absolutely not!” The museum explains the folklore and its history.

6. One Colorado study found longer adoption times for black cats
Colorado State University reported on shelter records spanning nine years at Larimer Humane Society and 18 years at the Dumb Friends League. In those two Colorado shelters, adult black cats took approximately three more days to be adopted than adult cats with black as a primary coat color, such as tuxedo cats, and four to six more days than cats of other colors.
The finding concerns time to adoption in two shelters; it does not establish that superstition caused the difference, that black cats are less likely to be adopted overall, or that the result applies to shelters elsewhere. It also is not a national estimate. The source does not establish a representative current national black-cat adoption or euthanasia percentage. Colorado State University’s 2013 summary describes the records and findings.

7. Halloween claims are not settled by shelter evidence
A peer-reviewed study of an urban U.S. shelter found no evidence that black cats had more favorable shelter outcomes during October. The authors also noted a lack of empirical evidence for claims that black cats suffer worse treatment at Halloween. Those findings do not prove what happens at every shelter or in every community; they do mean that seasonal danger and adoption claims should not be presented as established facts. The 2020 study, “Coat Color and Cat Outcomes in an Urban U.S. Shelter,” examines shelter outcomes in its specific setting.
