Choose the event your pet is allowed to attend and is likely to tolerate—not the one whose name sounds most welcoming. “Dog-friendly” rules vary by organizer, and spectators at AKC dog shows are generally advised to leave family pets at home. You can attend a cat show without entering a cat; competing is a separate decision with its own eligibility and preparation requirements.
How dog-friendly events and cat shows differ

Can you bring your dog to a dog event or dog show?
Do not assume that an event welcomes pet dogs just because it is dog-related—or because it is described as dog-friendly. Check the organizer’s current policy before you go, including leash or other control requirements, restricted areas, and any rules for service animals. If you are attending an AKC dog show as a spectator, AKC generally advises leaving family pets at home; a pet dog may not be admitted simply because you are watching.
For AKC trials and tests, the organization’s leash reminder says dogs must be on leash on event grounds except in designated areas. That guidance concerns those AKC events, not every public outing. Read AKC’s leash reminder and follow the particular venue’s directions. A leash does not make a dog eligible for an event that excludes pets.
Assess the setting, not just the invitation
If dogs are allowed, think about whether yours handles the expected activity, nearby dogs, and crowd calmly. There is no universal published test or stress threshold that predicts how an individual pet will respond. Use your knowledge of your dog’s behavior, plan for water and rest where permitted, and be prepared to leave if the environment is not working for them.

Can a household cat enter a cat show?
Yes, some cat-show associations offer household-pet classes, but eligibility depends on the association and the individual show. TICA provides household-pet showing guidance, while CFA explains that visitors are welcome to its shows. Watching as a spectator is different from entering a cat: follow the show’s current flyer and rules if you intend to compete.
TICA’s household-pet guidance notes that friendliness alone does not guarantee a cat will enjoy the experience: “Friendly cats often thrive in the show environment, but even the most loving cat can find the atmosphere challenging.” Consider your cat’s tolerance for handling and activity rather than relying on sociability as a proxy for comfort. For a first visit, TICA recommends attending as a spectator before deciding whether to enter your cat.

Check TICA requirements before entering
TICA’s December 2, 2025 Show Rules, Version A, generally set a minimum age of four calendar months, subject to exceptions. TICA’s guidance calls for current feline distemper and rabies vaccinations and sound health. Requirements can depend on the event, so check its current flyer and contact the listed entry clerk; ask your veterinarian about your cat’s health and vaccination needs.

What to do before you go
If you are taking a dog
- Read the exact event and venue rules, or contact the organizer to confirm that pet dogs may attend.
- Check leash, control, and restricted-area requirements; bring a leash if the event requires one.
- Consider your dog’s past behavior around crowds and other dogs, and identify a way to take a break or leave.
- At a dog show, ask the handler before approaching or petting a dog, and wait until the handler has finished showing. Keep space around dogs preparing to compete.
If you are entering a cat
- Attend a show as a spectator first if you are unsure how your cat will respond.
- Read the current show flyer and association rules; contact the listed entry clerk about eligibility and event-specific instructions.
- Confirm health and vaccination requirements with the show organizer and discuss your cat’s needs with your veterinarian.
- Follow the exhibitor’s instructions for transport and setup. TICA describes a carrier as necessary for transport and keeping a cat secure while an exhibitor sets up; its basic preparation guidance also includes grooming and claw trimming.
If you are only visiting a cat show
You do not need an exhibitor’s supplies or to bring a cat. Follow the venue’s visitor instructions and do not touch cats without their owners’ permission, as CFA asks of visitors.

Choose a dog event only after confirming that the organizer admits your dog and weighing whether the setting suits them. Choose a cat show as a spectator if you are curious but not ready to enter a cat; consider competing only after checking the rules and assessing your cat’s likely comfort. In either case, the animal’s needs and the specific event policy matter more than the label.
