They are useful tools, not guarantees of recovery or protection. Their value depends on how they locate and transmit data, whether service is available where your cat goes, how reliably you maintain the battery, and whether the device fits safely on your cat.
How a cat tracker gets a location to your phone
“GPS” describes how a device estimates its position; it does not explain how that position reaches you. A remote tracker needs both a way to determine location and a communications path to send updates to its app.
GPS with cellular service
GPS/cellular trackers use satellite navigation to estimate location and cellular networks to transmit it. PetSafe lists GPS and LTE for its tracker and notes that cellular coverage is required. Tractive lists GPS and cellular connectivity (LTE/4G Cat1bis) for the CAT 6 Mini, alongside Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. A tracker may therefore work differently—or be unable to send an update—where cellular coverage is unavailable. Check coverage in the places your cat is likely to travel, not just at home. PetSafe’s product information and Tractive’s US product page describe their respective systems.
Bluetooth and item-finding networks
Bluetooth tags and crowd-finding devices are not automatically live GPS trackers. Depending on the product, they may show proximity to your phone or rely on nearby participating phones detecting the tag and reporting its location. That is different from a GPS/cellular device designed to send remote location updates. Check the specific device’s location method and range before treating it as a way to find a cat who has travelled beyond nearby phones.

What trackers can—and cannot—do
Depending on the model, a tracker app may show location, provide safe-zone or escape alerts, keep location history, support sharing, or display activity information. These are features, not promises that a cat will be found. A tracker can lose service, run out of charge, be damaged, snag, or come off; an alert also depends on the device being powered, connected, and configured to send it.
Cats Protection’s 2026 CATS Report says 12% of owners own a GPS tracker collar. That is an ownership figure from the report, not evidence that trackers improve recovery rates. The report also cautions that trackers can be bulky or uncomfortable and may be lost or removed.
Check collar safety, fit, and comfort first
A tracker should never make a collar less safe. Cats Protection states: “The safest collars for cats are the quick-release or snap-opening collars.” Its collar guidance says two fingers should fit snugly beneath the collar.

- Use a properly fitted quick-release collar and make sure the tracker or its mount does not obstruct the release mechanism.
- Consider the device’s size and weight on your individual cat, as well as how it attaches and whether your cat tolerates wearing it.
- Check the collar’s fit regularly and inspect the collar, mount, and device for wear or damage.
- Assess snagging or entrapment risk, especially if your cat explores vegetation or tight spaces.
Minimum recommended cat weight and attachment design vary by model. For example, Tractive gives a recommended cat weight range of 6.6–17.6 lb for its CAT 6 Mini; that is a manufacturer specification, not a substitute for assessing fit and comfort on your cat. Tractive’s US product page lists the range.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep identification separate from tracking
A tracker is not permanent identification, and a microchip is not GPS. Cats Protection explains that a microchip is not programmed with GPS: it identifies a cat when someone finds them and has the chip scanned. A tracker may help you locate a device while it is working and connected, but it does not replace having your cat microchipped. See Cats Protection’s 2026 CATS Report and its microchipping guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for charging and connection failures
Battery life is a conditional manufacturer estimate, not a fixed interval that applies in every setting. Update frequency, signal conditions, and enabled features can affect how long a charge lasts. Keep the device charged, check its status in the app, and learn what the app shows when the tracker is offline or its battery is low. If a location stops updating, treat it as the last reported position—not proof of where your cat is now.
