Choose a harness by measuring your dog for the specific model, checking its fit while your dog moves, and making sure it stays secure without rubbing or restricting the shoulders. A Y- or H-style harness can be a useful starting point, but no shape guarantees a comfortable fit or normal gait for every dog.

Start with your dog’s measurements and needs

Measure your dog standing calmly with a flexible tape, then use the exact size chart for the harness you are considering. The neck base and the widest part of the chest behind the front legs are common measurement points, but manufacturers may give model-specific instructions. Breed or weight alone cannot tell you which size will fit.

Consider your dog’s body shape and behavior before choosing a closure or strap layout. A deep-chested dog or one that backs out of gear may need a more secure multi-point fit. If your dog dislikes equipment being pulled over its head, a side-opening or step-in harness may be easier to introduce. Pain, injury or mobility concerns are reasons to ask your veterinarian for guidance.

When possible, try the harness on your dog or follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions closely. The American Kennel Club’s fitting guidance also emphasizes checking fit rather than relying on a label or appearance.

Adjust it, then check your dog in motion

A harness should stay in place without pinching, chafing or sliding toward the throat. Check the neck opening, chest straps and girth strap behind the front legs. Make sure straps do not press across the front of the shoulders or crowd the armpits and elbows.

  1. Follow the model’s instructions. Adjust every strap and closure according to the manufacturer’s directions. Two-finger clearance is a useful cue in some guidance, not a universal fitting standard.
  2. Watch your dog walk and reach. Look for free shoulder movement and a harness that does not twist, shift or rub as your dog moves.
  3. Check security. See whether your dog can back out or pull the harness over its head. If it shifts or loosens, readjust it or try a different design.
  4. Inspect the skin and coat after use. Redness, fur indentations, skin bunching or debris beneath a strap can signal rubbing or pressure.

For one specific example, PetSafe’s Sure-Fit instructions say its chest ring should sit on or above the chest bone and that two fingers should barely fit between the skin and strap. Those directions apply to that model, not to every harness.

Match harness features to how you will use it

Need Features to consider What to check
Everyday walks Adjustable H- or Y-style harness, back attachment and lightweight construction Straps should clear the shoulders and stay comfortable during a walk.
Loose-leash training Front clip or dual-clip arrangement A front attachment changes the direction of leash pressure. Check that the harness does not press on the shoulder. A harness alone does not teach a dog to stop pulling.
Escape risk or deep chest Secure multi-point adjustment, double-H design or an extra belly strap; a backup leash connection may help with known escape risk More straps may improve security, but still need individual adjustment and movement checks.
Discomfort with head handling Side-opening or step-in closure Make sure the harness remains secure and does not rub; introduce it gradually.
Warm, wet or active conditions Material suited to the conditions, breathable construction, smooth seams and reliable hardware Nylon may retain heat and water; mesh may be less durable or rub; neoprene can trap heat and moisture; leather needs maintenance. Construction and fit matter as much as the material label.

Veterinary and animal-welfare guidance commonly points owners toward well-fitted H- or Y-style designs, but shape alone is not proof of comfort or unrestricted movement. A 2026 review of dog-worn equipment reports that all harness types in the gait studies it reviewed affected gait, with results varying by design and breed. In one comparison, both restrictive and non-restrictive styles reduced shoulder extension. The review also summarizes gait-related differences in a study of 66 dogs; that sample size is not an injury rate, and it does not show that one design injures every dog.

Introduce the harness and maintain it

Let a worried dog approach the harness or put its head through voluntarily where the design allows. Reward calm participation and avoid forcing a nervous dog into the gear. A closure that opens at the neck or sides can make this process easier.

What a harness can—and cannot—do

A harness can give you a way to attach a leash, but it does not by itself resolve pulling. VCA Animal Hospitals notes, “Each training plan is unique to the dog and the family, but most pulling can be prevented or reversed using a positive-reinforcement-based training approach.” Treat leash manners as a separate training task.

SlowTon No Pull Dog Harness and Leash Set - Heavy Duty, Soft Padded
  • 【No Pull & No Choke Design】: This harness simply goes through the dog's head, snaps on the belly and that's the end of it. Besides, the D-ring on the chest strap is used for no pull dog training and guiding direction, and the O-ring on the back is used for daily dog walking. The triangular design on both sides of this no pull harness helps to distribute the pulling force, so you don't have to worry about the dog choking when suddenly pulling.
  • 【Soft Velvet Padded & Durable】: With soft thicken and wider fleece pads used beneath the strap of neck, back and handle atop, this dog harness could reduce friction from movement and protect the health of the dog's skin. It also uses superior nylon material to ensure long-lasting use.
  • 【Leash Double Handle & Elastic Band】: You can use the top handle for casual dog walking, and the center handle for controlling the direction of the dog, easily guiding it through crowded areas and preventing storming in case of accidents. And the springy design of the leash really absorbs the pull from large strong dogs without tugging on your wrist and shoulder.
  • 【Neck & Chest Adjustable】: SlowTon dog harness is equipped with adjustable loop for both neck and chest girth, and the quick-release buckle allows for quick donning. No matter what kind of breed and shape, it provides proper length after adjusting to fit your dog's neck and chest, which is perfectly designed for walking, jogging, running, hiking and training.
  • 【Tangle-free Leash & Reflective】: The heavy-duty 360°swivel metal hook ensures no tangle. Plus, it has an elastic bungee and 2 padded handles, which is great for walking training of city dogs, or wandering off in country. Furthermore, its super bright reflective strips ensure a safe walk both day and night. And it comes with 2 hook and loop straps, a regular one Support Dog and the reflective one DO NOT PET.

There is no universal safest harness shape or established universal injury rate in the evidence summarized by the 2026 review. Canine sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarian Chris Zink cautions, in a statement reproduced by the American Kennel Club, that a poorly fitting harness could cause “overuse soft tissue injuries due to abnormal pressures or compensatory muscle overuse from using an unnatural gait.” This describes a possible concern, not a measured rate. If your dog shows pain, has a prior injury or has mobility problems, ask your veterinarian about an appropriate design and fit.
