Pica can stem from a medical problem or a behavioral one, and swallowed objects can cause obstruction, injury, poisoning, or dental damage. Chewing an object without swallowing it is not, by itself, pica.
What pica means—and what it does not
Pica is the persistent ingestion of non-food, non-nutritional material, such as plastic, paper, fabric, sticks, rocks, or mulch. Dogs may chew many things without eating them, so note whether material is actually swallowed. Puppy chewing and teething are not automatically pica, though swallowing objects or developing a repeated preference for them warrants veterinary advice. VCA Animal Hospitals and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine describe the distinction.
What can cause a dog to eat non-food items?
The object a dog chooses does not reveal the cause. Several medical and behavioral factors can look similar, and a veterinarian needs to assess the individual dog rather than infer a cause from the habit alone.
Possible medical contributors
Conditions a veterinarian may consider include gastrointestinal disease, intestinal parasites, anemia, malnutrition or an imbalanced diet, diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s disease, and some brain conditions affecting appetite. Certain medications, including corticosteroids and phenobarbital, can increase appetite. Soil eating, for example, may prompt assessment for nutritional or mineral problems, but it does not prove a deficiency. Do not start supplements or change the diet without veterinary guidance. VCA and UC Davis list these as possibilities, not a home diagnostic checklist.

- Great comfy muzzle for ‘snackers’: This dog mouth cover is good for scavengers, it can prevent licking, a quick nip, scavenging or picking up sticks or bigger items. Since it is a soft dog muzzle, it isn’t appropriate for bite-risk dogs but can be great for public transport or in other situations when friendly dogs must wear a muzzle
- Optimum Starter for Muzzle Training: The dog mesh muzzle is also a great starter muzzle for muzzle training, especially if one would cut a treat hole on the front. The soft material ensures that the humane muzzle will not rub or chafe, and its light weight makes it easier for gear-shy dogs to accept something on their face
- Humane Dog Muzzle: With ultra-breathable mesh, this dog mouth guard provides excellent ventilation for dogs to pant, and the mesh hole supports dogs to drink water. The feather-light weight is zero pressure for dogs to wear, this muzzle for medium sized dog is ideal for nail trimming, Vet visit and grooming
Possible behavioral contributors
Anxiety, frustration, inadequate enrichment, teething-related chewing, and compulsive behavior may contribute. Some dogs repeatedly take objects because they have learned that doing so prevents a person from retrieving them. Medical and behavioral factors can overlap; pica should not be assumed to be “just psychological.” Merck Veterinary Manual also notes that medical conditions, including anemia or electrolyte imbalance, can be associated with behavioral signs. Its behavior-diagnosis guidance is general rather than a pica-specific protocol.
Why swallowing objects can be dangerous
An object may lodge in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. An obstruction can cause pain, vomiting, or reduced appetite. A sharp object can injure the intestine, causing ulceration or perforation; leakage into the abdomen can lead to life-threatening peritonitis. Swallowed material can also cause poisoning. Chewing and ingestion may fracture teeth or leave material trapped between teeth, contributing to dental injury. These risks are described by VCA and UC Davis.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect your dog swallowed an object, even if the dog seems well; the absence of symptoms does not establish that it is safe to wait. Seek urgent or emergency veterinary care if your dog is choking, repeatedly vomiting, painful, weak, or otherwise acutely unwell. Do not induce vomiting or wait for an object to pass unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
How veterinarians diagnose pica
History and examination
The veterinarian will ask what the dog eats, how often it happens, what the dog eats and when, and what occurs when someone interrupts or retrieves the item. Bring notes or video if you can capture the behavior safely, especially if it happens when the dog is alone. A physical examination may identify relevant health or dental changes. A thorough history helps distinguish ingestion from chewing and identify patterns or possible triggers. UC Davis recommends observing the circumstances and using video when useful; VCA describes the history and examination.

Tests depend on the dog and the concern
If an obstruction is suspected, abdominal X-rays may help; contrast X-rays or ultrasound may be recommended if needed. Blood, urine, or fecal tests may help investigate an underlying condition. Endoscopy or biopsy may be considered when gastrointestinal disease is suspected. No single test set is right for every dog: the veterinarian chooses tests based on the history, examination, and suspected cause. VCA’s diagnostic overview describes these options.
When medical contributors have been evaluated and the behavior remains concerning, the veterinarian may recommend a veterinary behaviorist or another qualified behavior professional. Merck’s general diagnostic guidance emphasizes assessing medical and behavioral signs rather than treating a behavior label as a diagnosis.

How pica is treated and managed
Treatment depends on what the assessment finds. A medical condition needs cause-specific care; an obstruction or injury may require surgery. If anxiety or compulsive behavior is involved, a veterinarian may combine behavior modification with medication in some cases. A diet or feeding-pattern change may be recommended when appropriate, but it should be guided by the veterinarian rather than guessed at or replaced with supplements. VCA’s treatment guidance discusses these approaches.
Reduce access while the cause is assessed
- Supervise your dog and use barriers, a leash, or other safe environmental controls to keep tempting objects out of reach.
- Put away items the dog targets and provide suitable, correctly sized toys. Feeding toys can offer an appropriate opportunity to forage, but enrichment is support—not a cure for an untreated medical problem.
- Ask your veterinarian whether basket-muzzle training is appropriate for your dog. A properly fitted basket muzzle may prevent access while allowing panting and drinking, but it needs gradual, positive introduction and supervision. It does not treat the cause and is not a reason to leave a dog unattended. UC Davis notes that a muzzle prevents access without resolving the underlying issue; the American Kennel Club’s expert-informed guidance distinguishes basket muzzles from nylon muzzles and stresses gradual introduction.
Use reward-based behavior support
Teach and reward cues such as “leave it” and “drop it,” and reward your dog for turning attention toward you rather than continuing toward an object. Avoid punishment: it can increase anxiety and may make retrieving items harder. If the behavior persists, work with your veterinarian and, where appropriate, a qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist. Training and exercise may support a plan, but they do not replace diagnosis and treatment of medical disease. VCA, UC Davis, and the AKC describe management approaches.
