For a neutered pet cat, sex is not a reliable way to predict personality. Research does not establish a general rule that males are friendlier or females more independent—or the reverse. To find a good fit, focus on the individual cat’s observed behavior, history, health, and compatibility with your household. Sex and reproductive status can relate to particular behaviors, especially in cats that have not been neutered or spayed, but those findings do not define every cat’s temperament.
What research says about male and female cat personalities
Studies do not support a simple personality ranking based on sex. In a 2022 study examining owner and cat demographics, cat gender did not significantly affect the personality traits measured. That result argues against using sex as a general predictor, but it does not prove that sex can never relate to a particular behavior in any context.
A 1999 study by Kimberly J. Barry and Sharon L. Crowell-Davis observed 60 households, each with a pair of indoor-only neutered cats between six months and eight years old. Researchers observed each pair for 10 hours and found no significant gender differences in affiliative or aggressive behavior. The study also noted substantial individual variation, so its findings are about those observed neutered pairs—not a guarantee about every cat or every social situation.

When sex and reproductive status may matter
Personality is not the same as every behavior a cat may show. Veterinary guidance describes temperament and personality as influenced mainly by genetics, the queen’s health and behavior, and very early experiences; it also discusses behavior associated with neutering. For specific behaviors, reproductive status can be relevant, so distinguish an intact cat from one that has been neutered or spayed rather than treating “male” or “female” as the explanation on its own.
For example, a 2023 study of litter-box issues reported that male sex and intact status were associated with increased house-soiling in its study population, alongside other behavior and personality associations. This is a finding about litter-box outcomes in that study—not evidence that male cats generally have worse personalities, nor a prediction that every intact male will soil indoors.

Social behavior also depends on factors such as available resources, familiarity, age, sex, sex ratio, individual personality, and human intervention, including resource provision and neutering. A review of domestic cat sociality discusses these influences, but observations of free-living colonies should not be treated as direct forecasts of how a particular indoor pet will behave.

How to choose a cat that fits your home
Meet the cat when possible and ask shelter or foster staff what they have observed in ordinary situations. These are practical prompts for discussion, not a validated personality test.

- People: How does the cat respond to unfamiliar people, and how comfortable is it with handling?
- Activity and play: What play or activity level is typical for this cat?
- Startles and change: After a sudden noise or surprise, does the cat settle again, and how does it respond to changes in its surroundings?
- Other household members: What is known about its experience with children or other animals?
- History and health: What is known about its age, health, early experience, and reproductive status?
If you are comparing cats, use the same questions for each one. Consider current behavior, known history, household compatibility, and whether behavior seems stable across visits or settings. A brief first meeting may not show how a cat behaves once it feels at ease, so avoid making a promise about temperament from one encounter—or choosing on sex, coat color, or a stereotype alone.

Neither sex is the better fit by default. The more useful choice is the individual cat whose observed behavior, needs, and known history align with your home. Treat sex and reproductive status as part of the background, not a substitute for assessing the cat in front of you.
